Equipment Recommendations - The Home For New System and Upgrade Advice

I’ve been enjoying bourbon a bit more than Scotch lately, but that tends to go back and forth. My current go to brand for bourbon is Penelope. I’ve liked every one of theirs that I’be tried, and their barrel proof is excellent in an Old Fashioned (most I drink neat). Also for Old Fashioned New Riff Barrel Proof. My wife got me a bottle of Widow Jane Decadence for our anniversary and I can’t recommend it enough, absolutely delicious. Widow Jane 10 year is a solid choice as well, if you decant it the mineral tones come forward nicely.

As for coffee, I drank Folgers for 30-something years, then had a Nespresso, and now am looking for a bean brand but am having fun trying out different kinds.

While I really like bourbon and coffee, “bourbon flavored coffee” and “coffee infused bourbon” are both bastard children of Satan’s hemorrhoids and should be banned from this plane of existence.
I’ve got a spot down here that makes cold brew with their bourbon bean. It’s the only one I’ve ever remotely liked, they call it a Kentucky Joe.

Flavored coffee as a general rule is disgusting. But yeah, makers of bourbon flavored coffee have a special place in Hell.
I got a pound of bourbon barrel aged beans a few years back and the only way I was able to make it palatable is by mixing it about 1:4 with standard medium roast beans. Then it lent a nice, subtle whiskey flavor. It was absolutely overwhelming otherwise.

I did have a coffee where the beans were aged in a rum barrel and it was fantastic. But the fake flavoring is foul.

I miss drinking out of my French press everyday, but like you I switched because of the wife. I like our machine well enough, but it's not as good.
What machine are you using? We splurged on a Technivorm Moccamaster for our anniversary one year and it's been worth every penny.

I have a crazy ninja drip machine and a burr grinder. I really only use Charleston Coffee Roasters Signature Blend. I like espressos and lattes and cappuccinos and what not but nothing is as good as a nice robust bean ground perfectly and brewed well. If I didn’t also make coffee for my wife, I might do pour overs which I think is a more superior brewing method. I should get back in the habit of using our French press on the weekends.

One thing is for sure, if I put sugar and cream in it, I think the coffee sucks.
Charleston is good.
We used to get it at Costco.
I'm going to check out buying some online.

I bought one of the Ninja coffee pots. The wife wanted a $20 piece of crap, but she decided on this one because she wanted a timer on it most. It's not a bad drip machine but nothing fancy. I'd have gotten a better one, but I will do French press or espresso when I make it just for me, and the wife doesn't care enough.

The bummer is that my nerve disease has advanced to where I'm nauseous most days now and coffee isn't always possible anymore.

Really sorry to read this, man. I’m sure the uncertainty in our country and how it directly affects you just exacerbates the situation. Peace and strength to you.

I typically use the Nespresso for weekday mornings and espresso drinks, while I break out the grinder and French press for the weekend. Reasonably sure after watching my wife's cousin go full Italian-Man-Handcrafting-Espresso that a fancy espresso machine would be too fussy for what vision I have left.

I've never tried a bourbon that was actually palatable. Our selection up here is probably not representative. Great ingredient for beans, though.

Of the local distilleries and breweries out here, I've enjoyed Glynnevan Maple whisky and Propeller Brewery's Galaxy IPA. One of Propeller's brewery stores is next door to the local record shop, so it's hard not to pop in for a pint and a handpie after picking up a new LP. Barnburner was a nice small-batch Ontario whisky.

The scotch is generally out of my price range.

Not sure where to post but Fluance RT 86 and 87 are coming
I actually got into the pilot program, so I've got an RT-87 on the way.

Changes from the earlier models:
  • Dual-Layer Vibration-isolated Plinth, with the motor installed on the first layer and the tonearm on the second.
  • A Straight 9" Carbon-Fiber Tonearm
  • Pre-installed VM95-ML
  • 22mm, 4.1lb Acrylic Platter
  • 33, 45, and 78 RPM playback
  • Servo-controlled DC motor with a declared w/f spec of 0.065%, slightly improved from the RT-85.
  • $699.99

Nice - I had the 82 w acrylic platter upgrade that I bought barely used b4 upgrading to Masterdeck and then my current ride. The Fluance was an amazing value for me, so I hope you end up feeling the same way.

I love my Sol! I do not expect this will replace it, but it seemed like it would be a very fun opportunity to try out a pre-production unit, and I've always heard good things about Fluance. Perhaps I will give it to my sister or sell it to a friend afterward.

Guessing they removed the auto stop?
Nope, still has Auto-Stop. I only listed things I noted were different from the other models.

Very cool. I have the Rt-85 and haven't gotten an email about being selected. Maybe an upgrade is in my future
