Best Music of 2019

2019 has been a somewhat slow year for me so far in terms of new releases I really like, although I am a bit behind (my Spotify library is full of albums from this year I'm still trying to get around to lol). From what I've heard, some of my favorites are

Girl With Basket of Fruit by Xiu Xiu (possibly my AOTY)
Beware of the Dogs by Stella Donnelly
Assume Form by James Blake
Walk Through Fire by Yola
GREY Area by Little Simz
The Big Freeze by Laura Stevenson
Tasmania by Pond
Stuffed & Ready by Cherry Glazerr
ARIZONA Baby by Kevin Abstract

Kinda drunk so I’ll keep the list short for now. Will edit later if I need to ;)

Aldous Harding - Designer

Beirut - Gallipoli (weaker than the previous albums — still pretty solid overall though).

Weyes Blood - Titanic Rising

Durand Jones & the Indications - American Love Call

Sharon Van Etten - Remind Me Tomorrow

Nilufer Yanya - Miss Universe

Lizzo - Cuz I Love You

I’m also looking forward to fka twigs and hoping for a second album. The video for Cellophane is surreal af and the song itself is top notch.

2019 has been VERY slow for me so far. Here's another recommendation for Malibu Ken which is probably my favorite album of the year at this point.

"The Barrel" by Aldous Harding is my favorite track but couldn't really get into Designer.

I got the VMP pressing of Barrie and that's a good one. I need to give it a few more spins.

That Aldous album is underrated!

Man, that Flee Lord record is great. I still think Butcher Lords is one of the best Griselda cuts to date.

I get that, his early catalog has some absolute classics. I feel as if Aesop has been on a very clear trajectory throughout his career. He's still hardly an easy MC to keep up with but his lyrics have become noticeably less coded over the past decade or so. In that regard, Malibu Ken is hardly a shock, but I think he and Tobacco really hit a stride on tracks like Acid King and 1 + 1 = 13

If somebody is pressing me for my favorite rappers, Aesop is near the very top. It's him, Kendrick and Outkast as far as being closest to my heart. But I haven't liked his post-Blockhead work nearly as much. Just finished Malibu Ken for the first time. Think there's a good chance it becomes a favorite.

Edit: This Flee Lord is solid too.

Here is my Q1 list. So far in April and May I'd add Ruby Rushton - Ironside, Cykada, Alfa Mist - Structuralism, and Ezra Collective - Steal My Joy. Crazy how jazz my current listening has become, but then again 70s African vinyl doesn't count here...

4. Bassekou Kouyate - Miri
5. Little Simz - Grey Area
6. Sarah Tandy - Infection in the Sentence

As for best songs, two stand out head and shoulders above the rest for me

Dave - Lesley
