April 2022 Vinyl Spin Challenge - Intertextuality and You

April 11: Vladimir Nabokov, Details of a Sunset
  • “That evening there had been beer and songs with friends in honor of Mark and russet-haired, pale Klara, and in a week they would be married; then there would be a lifetime of bliss and peace, and of nights with her, the red blaze of her hair spreading all over the pillow, and, in the morning, again her quiet laughter, the green dress, the coolness of her bare arms.”
If you know the story, I can't imagine I'll find a more fitting song to any day of this challenge...

Weirdly, several tracks sort of obliquely fit the story: Innocent When You Dream, I'll Be Gone, Wake Me Up, More Than Rain, Train Song.

I suppose an end-of-life fever dream and a DMT trip are pretty close.

April 10: F. Scott Fitzgerald, Babylon Revisited
  • “He left soon after dinner, but not to go home. He was curious to see Paris by night with clearer and more judicious eyes than those of other days. He bought a strapontin for the Casino and watched Josephine Baker go through her chocolate arabesques.”

I didn’t read the rest of the story so for all I know their marriage may have crashed & burned, but hopefully it turned out as strong as this marriage has so far. Almost 53 years together & still going strong as far as I know.

April 12: Huzama Habayeb, A (Somewhat) Realistic Dream
  • “How I hate these early mornings! Cursed are those who indulge in idealizing the moment when the sun lights up the horizon! They give it the exaggerated burden of grandeur, majesty, and fancy. This was a scathing birth for which I wouldn’t wait, and which compelled me to await an even more biting day. And although I give myself a reason to hope the sun might withdraw its decision to rise, for just one morning, by an hour or even a few minutes, it rises in spite of me every morning. Now, the rumbling echo of rusty water pipes was dimmed by frosty dew, and I got a poor thread of cold water to wash my face.”
The first thing that popped into my head.

Gather round kids and I'll tell you about power trios in 1970, the men who took off their vests mid song and the only thing longer than the jams were the 20FT white guitar cords they were rockin'...

In particular, the song on this album called While My Guitar Gently Weeps sounds like how the narrator is feeling this morning. It sounds like a bad hangover.

This story mentions regretful Parisian debauchery set at Cabaret’s and Casinos. I figured the best Daft Punk song Daft Punk never made (well, at least half of em) which features an etching of a roulette wheel on side B would be an apt choice.

Side Note: I was dancing around the house so hard my first spin I forgot to take a photo. So I had to spin it twice.

Hamilton Leithauser + Rostam - I Had A Dream That You Were Mine

422BDEE1-AD3B-4CA5-ADD4-1A81CFC2D0EB.jpeg
Thanks s album has Hamilton Leithauser ruminating on love, relationship, and romance. The opening segment of this quote reminded me of a Wedding shower or rehearsal dinner which brought me too the track “The Bride’s Dad” which describes a humorous situation that occurred at such an event.

Side Note: I love Hamilton Leithauser’s solo albums as much, if not more than many Walkmen albums. Very underrated. Also a fantastic live performer.

Little Wings - Light Green Leaves

The opening portion of the quoted segment, “How I hate these early mornings!”; reminded me of the track “Uh-oh (It’s Morning Time Again)”. It’s almost a childrens song in it simplicity but it sticks with you to the point that it’s often something that I start humming to myself any time I have to get up extra early…

Or as John said...
When I wake up early in the morning
Lift my head, I'm still yawning
When I'm in the middle of a dream
Stay in bed, float up stream (float up stream)
Please, don't wake me
No, don't shake me
Leave me where I am
I'm only sleeping

April 13: Chinua Achebe, The Sacrificial Egg

“Julius was worried because it was almost a week since he had seen Janet, the girl he was going to marry. Ma had explained to him very gently that he should no longer come to see them "until this thing is over by the power of Jehovah." Ma was a very devout Christian, and one reason why she approved of Julius for her only daughter was that he sang in the church choir.”

The text concerns Julius absorption into another family. Therefore

I Will Be Absorbed by Egg from the album Egg (1970).
