And David Crosby has a history of disliking anything that isn't old white and male.

And tweeted out "meh" to the news of Eddie Van Halens death, so he obviously wouldn't know talent if it erupted right in front of him.

Gotcha, and yes... absolutely agreed. As I mentioned, It is absolutely news because of her sex. Without being entirely familiar with her work, do her lyrics and online presence draw attention to sexism and misogyny as a narrative? If so, isn’t this being news “the point”?

Between the Kikagaku split and this tweet, Ryley Walker is flying up my "need to listen to more of" list

One final time: Fuck David Crosby

This is why I took Twitter off my phone.

No, she doesn't overtly write about sexism, and beyond literally being a woman and talking about relationships (and not only romantic ones), there isn't any particular "let's talk misogyny" narrative. So no, the content of her music and presence doesn't invite the conversation, except insofar as actual misogyny makes it a subject.

And no, it isn't automatically misogyny to not enjoy or to critique music you don't enjoy (though if you're not familiar enough to know an artist's work, what are you actually critiquing? Still not necessarily a problem, just something to think about in general).

However, referring to Bridgers as "the sad girl of the moment" or comparing her out of the blue to say, St. Vincent, because she isn't a guitar virtuoso (*ahem* @TheThinWhiteDuke 😉 ) is sexist. Most of us have internalized biases it's wise to examine from time to time.

@GritNGlitter I’m familiar with her music in that I have tried to enjoy it by listening all the way through a dozen times but I didn’t pay particular attention to the lyrical content, just wether I could vibe with the tunes. Also, not sure if the “sad girl of the moment” comment was a reference to me mentioning her singing “sad songs”, which clearly didn’t imply any sexual connotation to it.

Prince once made a guitar disappear into thin air at the rock and roll hall of fame. Just gone! INTO THIN EFFING AIR!!! Where was Crosby's fury then? WHERE I ASK???

I'll show myself out.

@Tys1, I tagged the only person I was specifically responding to, otherwise I was responding to various points in the general conversation. Not vibing with the music is sufficient to say "I don't like it" but off-base for suggesting maybe she invites the misogyny narrative.

The sad girl remark has been made in music publications and in comments on this board.

I'm not saying the people who are against it are sexist, but they are soft.

@Woob_woob, this should be a t-shirt

@GritNGlitter you’re right, after re-reading it I did suggest that she provoked it. It wasn’t my intent to effectively say “she was asking for it” and I can see how it could be interpreted that way. I could have left it as an inquiry on the subject matter of her social presence and lyrics, instead I assumed. I dare say a subliminal bias of mine has been realized, so yeah... thanks for revealing it❤️

You know, I generally don't get into these sorts of things on the board. I'm usually the big glittery ball of sunshine and rainbows and whatnot. However, @TheThinWhiteDuke you're wrong. Dead wrong. It is and you are, whether or not that is/was your intention. This isn't a subjective "well i think/feel X" sort of subject. Contd...

You can feel that there isn't an inherent sexist bias in all of this all you'd like, but you'd still be fucking wrong here. Its fine to apologize and move on Its better to actually take some of this information, internalize it, and maybe address any subconscious biases you may have. Its growth. We should all do it.

You can subjectively not like her music//lyrics/whatever. But to imply that this specific criticism isn't interrelated to misogyny is myopic at best and sexist at worst. I don't know you nor your intentions so I won't speculate on that. I'm just reading what you wrote and telling you not only do I disagree with you, but you need to evaluate any particular personal blindspots you may have.

Phoebe Bridgers isn’t qualified to carry David Crosby’s guitar case. That is all. Guitar smashing? Pete Townsend, anyone?

David Crosby isn’t qualified to carry a guitar case. Perpetually carried by more talented friends who have all dumped him because he’s a shit.

Also he created the angst. Not her. She just just played a show and he stuck his big nose into it.
