Equipment Recommendations - The Home For New System and Upgrade Advice

Well the one takeaway I have from listening to the Levinson 5805 today is that it's pretty much impossible to accurately gauge gear unless it's in your listening room with your components. Was listening on a pair of Wilson Benesch speakers along with a TT and stage that would probably dwarf my mortgage, and honestly I thought my system smoked it. I know it's all personal preference and so much of it comes down to source, which is why I hate testing systems using vinyl, unless it's on the same table and cart I have and using one of my records, otherwise it makes it pretty much impossible to tell what's doing what. But man the gear this guy has is absolutely bananas.

You put the sub in the listening position (ie where you would sit) and then crawl around listening for the best sound. Then the sub goes in that spot.

I guess the sound waves bounce more or less the same way in reverse.
My wife has already walked in on me wearing white gloves moving my Lintons. You REALLY think I should crawl around my living room on all fours “listening for the best sound”???

Acoustically, the best approach is a sub crawl, which is absurd but works.

You set up your sub in the listening position and then, while playing a test tone, move around the room with your head a couple feet off the ground and determine where it sounds most well-integrated. That is where the sub should go for best performance at the listening position.

Or, like me, you shove it in a corner because that's the only place you've got.

The sub crawl works. Or it doesn’t.

I was taught you put the sub where you have the strongest bass.

In my place, the sub wants to be at the entrance of the front door in your way when you enter equidistant between the front door and the coat closet. You don’t have to crawl to hear it. Stupid.

As I said, mine is in the corner because that’s where I have space. Sometimes you’ve gotta choose between Ideal and Good Enough.
