Television

There are a couple of things really getting my goat about this years Top Chef.

First, it is subtitled Destination Canada, and yet after 8 episodes they have not fucking left Toronto. Driving 2 hours down the QEW to Niagara does not really cut it.

Also the Chefs Table kitchen is adorned for indigenous art and yet have not once talked First Nations foodways and land stewardship. Also I am not an expert on Indigenous art, but what they have on the walls appears to be done in the West Coast style, 4000+ kilometres from the Toronto studio.

Go Tristan Go!!
I bet they end up with the finale in like Montreal or Vancouver or something but yeah, I assumed they’d have moved around a bit more.

If you want a bit of a switch up on a reality show, this next season of Alone which premieres June 12 is set in South Africa this season. Which will be a nice change up. They’ve done Mongolia and Patagonia I. The past but this will be the first legit warm weather season and I am curious how that’ll work out.

agreed, this last one this week is hysterical. I died when he as captain sully took out his ipod to listen to the chorus of bring me to life before landing in hudson. I really really want the real cpt to watch this episode and comment on the episode.
Hell yeah this episode was fantastic. I died when he started choking out on puppet-administered breast milk.

Watching the dog cloning episode of The Rehearsal and feeling sick to my stomach.

If I could, I would, but based on all I've read about cloning, you need to take DNA from when the dog was a puppy
All of our dogs were are precious and I'd want all of them forever, but this is so weird.

Yet, I think I could definitely do the same as I did with all of our originals. It's all about nurture, training and spoiling

Is it just me, or are The Last of Us online communities the absolute worst? Getting hung up on casting decisions of fictional characters is....weird. Is it just because of so many video game bros?
The Last of Us 2 was brain-destroyingly rage-inducing for a lot of gamers. Like The Last Jedi. Embarrassing stuff that I think a lot of people never grew out of.

I can definitely understand that it seems to be a downgrade of Season One. But they just can't move past Bella Ramsey being cast as Ellie. I admit I never played the game, but most of the clips I've seen of it online she seems fine to me for the character. The video game Ellie is an animation, you're not going to find a perfect person to be cast as an animated character.

This season has been entertaining though Joel’s absence is does change the show essence and so far not for the better. That love scene that occurred in the last episode was laughably bad but that was more an issue of writing than one of acting.

That being said I am always happy when Jeffery Wright shows up on my TV screen and the decaying Seattle is fun to see since I live in the area.

I mean, they could travel back in time 15 years or so and bring back pre-transition Elliot Page.

Also, I'm glad I decided to cancel my subscription to HBO for now with the Pitt being done, and Hacks kind of falling off (it's so toxic I really can't watch). It sounds like TLOU isn't worth my time just now and it's no because I'm super picky about the adaptation (I'm really not).

Jeffery Wright is one of my favorite actors. I knew I saw him in the trailer and was glad he finally showed up.
I have to admit after watching the first 3 eps of this new season, I am struggling to remember why Season 1 had such an impact, because so far this season has not grabbed me at all.
The past week's episode (I forget what number we're on) felt a lot more like Season 1.

Speaking of shows I have soured on, I have stopped watching The Handmaid’s Tale. I got through Season 5 and mrs and I were still interested in this new season. After the first 2 eps I tapped out. Mrs says she will slog through to the end but not me. EVERYTHING in the new season was pissing me off.

Murderbot, there is a hell of a lot riding on you.

We couldn't even be bothered to start the new season.
It was a show that should've ended already. It was a hard enough watch without it becoming just straight up torture porn around season 3. I'm usually a completionist once we've done at least two seasons too.

Yeah, It feels a bit more run-of-the-mill post-apocalyptic shows like those seasons of The Walking Dead before it got too interminable. I rewatched season 1 prior to season 2 the contrast between the two is fairly noticeable.

The strange thing is, and this applies to both seasons, The best part of this show is when it leaves the main character to tell a new story.

In season one you get the opening where it’s telling us the initial outbreak. Then you get a whole episode that establishes what life is like in Boston QZ, and then Bill and Frank episode, and The Mall episode, then The Kansas City QZ episode where we learn about Henry and his kid brother, then we get an episode where we learn about the Jackson WY outpost, the episode about the religious cannibals and then the finale. Each episode explores new and interesting parts of this world.

By contrast, this season the first three episodes, even though 5 years and a few new characters are introduced, spend most of our focus on Joel/Ellie and their life and aftermath. This didn’t do much to add to the world. The most interesting things about season two are again the parts that takes the attention away from the stars. The WFL and Scars conflict is much more interesting than almost anything happening in the A plot. I will finish this season but if it doesn’t pick up a bit I might be done after this.

I bailed after season 3, it felt too much like Elizabeth Moss torture porn. I think the world is frightening realistic but it’s was just like I don’t wanna see people raped and tortured during my recreation time.

I suggested elsewhere that the show might have to bring Isaac in early and make him more prominent given the narrative needs of the format, and signs are already pointing to that being right. He's a right choice to expand upon, so I'm glad.

That said, I think the flattening/collation of the game's carefully plotted reveals and time skips is where the show might struggle most. It'll be harder to "flip the script" in a more linear format compared to what that the game allows, which was key to the impact of some of the devastating moments to come. Everything running parallel in the show might hamper that overall impact.

I've been pleased with many of the additions/changes so far. Big question will be if they can sustain between the gut punches we're still in for.
