I know this is last week's news, but I picked this up yesterday after streaming a couple of songs.Kim Gordon’s new album is interesting. It’s reminds me a bit of Low’s last couple albums production wise. The big difference is the dissonance on those albums usually builds to moments where unbridle and haunting beauty burst through the murky glitchy distortion. Those moments are much less present on KG’s The Collective, it’s still a captivating listen but it’s not something I will likely return to often. I am glad it exists.
I am also glad it exists, but after about 3 or 4 samey tracks I honestly wish I spent the money elsewhere.
Like, fuck yeah Kim is doing cool shit at 70...but I wish that cool shit had a bit more variation to it, and the coolness of the album quickly degraded into being grating for me. Not sure honestly how long I'm going to hang onto it before selling it. Definitely going to do it some other place than where the store employee ranted and raved about the album when I picked it up.
