Not saying that "she is mother" is the only thing they say related to her mothering. Lady Gaga has the same thing with her fans. It's like a Stan thing.
I hear you. It reminds me of that saying "white women copying gay men copying black women."
Gaga has her "little monsters," so maybe it's less creepy to imagine a young fanbase looking up to a celebrity than middle-aged women with actual children of their own referring to someone their own age or younger as their "mother," which is the context I was introduced to it. That's all just the perception I've gathered on my part, though.
I have now found different instances of Swift addressing it directly as it specifically relates to her, though. One of them is a clip of her live onstage mentioning it. Another is a Seventeen Magazine article from way back in 2014 where she tells people she is not their mom. Apparently, some girl's real mom was pissed that after she had "earned the right" to that title through raising her, her daughter was calling Swift "mother." Taylor wrote a response agreeing with her and addressing fans by.saying "I have not earned the right to be referred to as your 'Mom'.
I'm more like your crazy aunt.
So you shall not call me 'Mom'.
Obviously, that was a decade ago and it's still happening.
Celebrity worship is just creepy to me in general and it stands to reason that the bigger the Celebrity to more potential there is for such unhinged over-the-top worship.
I've researched that cult mentality to a degree, so it's hard for me not to make these immediate connections.
I wrote a huge 5-part interview piece with Isis Aquarian of the Source Family cult years ago. I became friends with her, did a bunch of research, and worked on it for months. It wound up pushing almost 30k words. Isis decided to print and bind it into some "book" that she included in the official Source Family archives which I believe are housed at UC Santa Barbara.
One of the main things that stood out to me in her story was the discovery of how, toward the end, Jim Baker/Father Yod was telling his followers that he was not God and that they needed to graduate and flee the nest. He was over it and wanted everyone to evolve and move on, but they weren't hearing it. He ultimately died hanggliding, but at the time, he was effectively trying to dissolve things from what they were. He was able to convince them that he was God, but couldn't convince them that he wasn't.
