Movies

Finally got to see Poor Things today. So much of it I found so compelling and absolutely stunning to look at, but I am still unraveling thoughts about the whole thing. I'm not sure how much I enjoy where it ends up, but the bulk of the film has so much to offer that it doesn't matter too much I guess. Also Emma Stone is phenomenal.

spent a week in cancun and got to watch a few movies during my flights to/from-

arrival - i had not seen this before. enjoyed the more deliberate nature of this and i can't say i saw the 'twist' coming.

the plague dogs - man, if you thought watership down was depressing and want more of that, see this movie!

the shape of water - somehow i had not seen this, either. the performances from pretty much every main actor were just so good.

waiting for guffman - i still literally lol at 'i just HATE YOU, and i hate your ass FACE'. a classic.

edit- also, we went and saw the iron giant the night before we left, and one of the previews was for the new garfield animated movie. can chris pratt stop being asked to voice characters i grew up with, please? PLEASE?

You know, if you'd just studied heptapod more in school you would have seen the 'twist' coming before you'd even seen the movie!

Jokes aside, I love Ted Chiang's stories so much, and if more get adapted I hope it's with the same level of craft and care as Arrival.

Picked up some shipping boxes and decided to take a pic of my (majority of) movie collection...
First three boxes are Criterion (didn't need to label those haha), most of the boxes behind are my books and 1/6 scale figures but also a few with movies.
I really need to win that lottery lol

Holy shit dude

Saw Kore-eda's latest film Monster tonight. Took me a minute to buy in, but ultimately found it a really beautiful story. Nobody does humanistic stories like this guy.

And the score is absolutely gorgeous. Really hurt seeing the "in memory of ryuichi sakamoto" at the end.
Did you see it theatrically or is it streaming somewhere?

My wife asked me to watch a movie with her this afternoon and she picked Compliance. I got so pissed off watching this that I had to go and see how much was true and reading about the incident made me even more furious. So many fucked up and dumb people in this world. That poor woman deserved every penny she got from McDonald's.
