Vinyl Me Please (store, exclusives, swaps, etc)

@Joe Mac - Is VMP also dead to you?

I know it’s also dead the one and only King Daddy AKA @Lee Newman

That’s strong. There are reasons I’d come back, but not very many. It’s more like before they were a club and fun and now they’re just another online store and I’d rather give my custom to my local. Plus, I’m on a diet...

Ok, I guess that was a stretch. But that album is full of catchy, juicy hits and most of second half of the album really does display that burlesque sound - which makes sense as they were a burlesque group. I love how sexual the album is and how cheap the sound is as well at tunes. It’s an iconic album actually. It’s not a classic gem, I’ll agree with that, but that release is way more interesting than at least half the exclusives VMP have been releasing lately 🤷‍♂️

I would rate the album like 7.7/10, so it definitely isn’t a classic but it’s held up well and stands out as an album from the 2000’s! 😉

I'm with you on this. Finally re-bought PCD in the current sale along with the new Lana Del Rey Exclusive and Big Willie Style (Not my top pick but it's got some great Nostalgia vibes and I already have most of the UO exclusives I wanted).

I know people hate on UO but their exclusives have been great, especially lately and are pressing alot of good stuff that wouldnt be pressed otherwise. Their twitter makes it seem like they really have a good dedicated Vinyl team. I may not love UO in general but more than happy to give the Vinyl side my support.

Given Storf’s view on Tool I’d be surprised if we get any exclusives of them.
Weird, the Tool fans I always met liked Tool but were kind of pretentious and looked down on most other Hard Rock/Metal bands. I'm only finding out now that a lot of Tool fans are kind of horrible.

My memories/experiences with Tool fans are so different. Maybe it’s because of where I’m at in Texas. Pretty much anybody that listened to rock music instead of country radio got along with each other. Plus it’s not like Tool had a distinct subculture like Insane Clown Posse. It was a really popular band! Saying all fans of “x” are like “y” has always struck me as...not cool...especially in situations of a band with that level of popularity

Grace Lightman is now $21 in the VMP store.
And here I was thinking I got a little discount by grabbing it as a swap. Really must not be moving. I’d recommend anyone into pop at least check it out. Not groundbreaking, but it’s a fun pop concept album. I’m not a big pop listener and it caught my ear for what it’s worth.

Yeah I live in NY and am around the same age as Storf (I think) and I could never imagines any of the gym or jock crowds listening to Tool. Maybe some of the more elitist, asshole Goth or metal-head kids.
But even still I would never not like a band because of their fans. And as much as I like Storf, the fact that he likes Florida Georgia line and other Bro-Country means that he probably shouldnt take that stance either.

I don't think his personal experience in the town he grew up in negates yours, or vice versa. I doubt that he's lying, so of course it colors his view of the band; not the fans themselves so much as their treatment of him. The aural trigger of being bullied makes them inseparable. The plural of anecdote isn't data, so their fanbase is more than gym meatheads, and they possibly only make up a small portion.

Yeah, for curation purposes, he needs to be aware of his biases, especially depending on the tracks or exclusives for which he has primary input. I hope they all do to some extent. I'm personally very glad the country exclusives they've done so far are from the classic side, nothing from the modern pop country or r&b with twang that's dominated the charts the last few decades. One reason I'd never want that job is that I dislike just about anything modern pop/r&b and have no problem calling it all utterly disposable.

I should have elaborated, definitely don't think he's lying at all just that this surprises me as it's almost completely the opposite of what high school groups listened to it my area. I find it more interesting than anything. I also like FGL so no shade meant there either.

And there's a lot of great modern pop/r&b right now, you're missing out.

A. If VMP is gonna do tool they are. Storf is not the last or most important word on essentials/exclusives

B. I don’t think curators need to worry about their biases. I think it is the job of the customer to understand those biases and their curator.

Some of the dislike for VMP’s curation recently is that it is clear that it is more of a committee’s decision then one curator. The customer’s Job is to decide if that committee’s direction fits their idea of the product. Matt made my decision easy with his tone deaf response to the forum. Their direction since has mostly been a lot of bias confirmation for me. Which is cool. Still would have loved those classics picks and the Jorge Ben Jor record.

I really like “I Hate This Part” and that song they with Busta Rhymes, “Don’t Cha”, but I’m not much of a fan of the rest of their work. The other singles from that first album aren’t terrible tho.

What they desperately need to do, in my opinion, is just launch the bloody crate diggers sub. The essentials, and even to an extent the classics, have become comical at this stage.

The idea that it’s a committee of hipsters picking this year rather than just one rogue hipster is proper scary...

Also dump now again, egon needs to realise that his talents lie in ectoplasm, not music...

The best thing a bout "Don't Cha" is it ensured Sir Mix could continue buying pounds of gold with royalty checks.
