Definitive Audiophile pressings

I still don't love it anywhere near enough to drop 100+ on it but I see that I could get a new Japanese "Jazz Analog Legendary Collection" copy for about $40 which is a much more attractive price. I can't find a lot of information on this pressing but people on Discogs are showing it quite a bit of love with a few people ranking it just behind the UHQR and MoFi copies. I'm thinking as someone that's not a die-hard fan, this should be a solid copy to grab in the 50 or less range?

I don’t have the KoB from the Jazz Analog Collection series but do have a few others from that series. I think they are solid! Have nice jackets as well. The 33 UHQR is still my go to for stereo.

I would also recommend the mono pressing @MikeH mentioned. I have the UHQR, MoFi, and several other versions, and the mono is near the top for most played. Excellent sound and value for $30. In fact, I'd recommend that whole "mono series" of Miles records. All are really well done.

I mean the AAA Rhino copies of Fear of Music are cut by Chris Bellman and pressed at RTI. It’s not like they’re sprinkling magic dust to make them sound better just bc they are $40. The Rhino HF Cars only had originals and mediocre mofis to beat, all they did with that one was have an engineer like Kevin Gray finally cut a copy from the OG tapes

yea--for price to quality ratio, that RKS is excellent, even if it's potentially not AAA depending on who you believe!

Ryan Smith who said himself he cut it from a tape vs SHF conspiracy theorists who say there is a digital step in the remix somewhere before it went to tape. The truth is out there somewhere lol

haha i always thought it was AAA then saw a buncha discogs comments which i took VERY MUCH with a grain of salt. didn't realize RKS confirmed it's AAA.

Well technically he just confirmed he cut it from a tape, but when they remixed the tapes down to a new analog mono tape there may have been a digital step, no one is sure.

70's Columbia reissues are really good stereo if you want to give one of them a go. I have this copy as my go to 33.

I can second this. I had a 77 stereo and it was excellent, but I sold it since I had a UHQR, Mofi and the mono

That would match the claims in the AP article. The mono is a fold from the 2 track stereo.
Edit: I can't tell if they did the fold from the 3 track or 2 track source. Probably the 3 I would guess.

Just got my Meters bundle last night and quickly spun Cissy Strut and compared it to my OG pressing. I think the new one wins for me. It’s a much cleaner sound on the periphery while keeping that dirty bass sound up front. I’ve never had og copies of Look Ka Py Py or Struttin so can’t make a direct comparison but anticipate those sounding amazing too. These are probably the best sounding copies we will get at about 1/10th the price of NM originals.

3 track, they talk about it a bit here
 
My question is why would there be a digital step when mixing it down to analog tape when you already did a seperate transfer to DSD and PCM digital files? Doesn’t make sense
 
I also assume the reason KoB is cut by Ryan Smith at Sterling while all the other mono Miles reissues were cut by Kevin Gray is because during this time Sony would only lend out tapes to Sterling

Anxiously awaiting mine! I think I have a Scorpio/rhino pressing of Look Ka Py Py that actually doesn’t sound terrible but anticipate that the new ones will smoke it
