The National

I love Graceless, but agreed on I Need My Girl. The Nashville show was the first time I’ve seen them play it without going into This Is The Last Time (a song I prefer). But while we’re at it, I’d throw in Don’t Swallow The Cap and Fake Empire. I’ve seen then play those live at basically every show, and they have been on most show downloads I have. I like both songs generally, but I’d take a change up live. I haven’t gotten sick of Mr. November live yet.
I think I really love I Need My Girl because the first time I saw it live at Treasure Island Music Festival in 2015 Lauren Mayberry from Chvrches came out and sang it with Matt as a duet.

I don't think I'll ever get sick of Mr. November. I love watching the band on stage when Matt is out in the crowd.
I agree to a certain extant on Don't Swallow the Cap. My husband always says he doesn't need to see The Day I Die ever again and then when he sees it, he loves it.

I am ridiculously spoiled, I've seen them 48 times so far, tomorrow should be 50, (would have been so appropriate for MSG) but I blew off New Haven a couple weeks ago. So, I've seen a lot of songs.

I love when others get excited about seeing a song because I remember how I felt at those first shows I attended. And, to be honest, I still feel that way when seeing them.

The Day I Die
has this turned into an unpopular National opinion thread? lol

This and System Only Dreams in Total Darkness. probably my two least favorite songs off SWB and they feel completely unrelated to the vibe/feeling of that album. I think because SWB was on the heels of the Grateful Dead boxset they went a little bit more jammy/rocky, but it's still extremely restrained.

It's a great song! I've seen Lauren Mayberry & Phoebe Bridgers sing it with them. We also saw Lauren sing Guilty Party with them at ACL and My Backwards Walk (Frightened Rabbit) in Glasgow

UGGGHH - ETA: We saw the ethereal Lisa Hannigan sing I Need My Girl with them as well.

No. No. No. System is a great song and I will never tire of it!!!

It's ok to not like every song by a band that you love. Don't ever be a blind follower.

Agreed on I Need My Girl. I think it's too "on-the-nose" sappy. I'd rather Matt's lyrics be just a little bit more cryptic. I also feel like Pink Rabbits is played out. I remember when TWFM came out that and finding that to be one of my least favorite songs only for the band and most fans to absolutely adore it and play it live constantly. Give me Sea of Love, Humilation, This is the Last Time, Don't Swallow the Cap. I absolutely love Graceless though.
Agreed on the "sappiness" of INMG.

I will fight you over Pink Rabbits! Husband dislikes it but LOVES Humiliation. So awesome to get that in Chicago, DC & Philly. Def need Sea of Love again.

Uh yeah I agree here too. I think they’re fun enough live, but I’m never itching to hear them.

Also…I love Pink Rabbits a ton. I always love seeing them play it live.

Have fun at the MSG show! That will probably be wild. I’ve never see them play in that huge of a place.

Thank you. I think it's too large of a venue for them, so it will be interesting. I saw them at Barclay's in Brooklyn on the TWFM tour and thought it was too big of a venue. Sound was bad (I had seats, not GA)

Saw them at Agganis Arena in Boston in 2019. We did have rail, and it was great. Not sure how the sound was towards the back or in upper levels. That said, MSG is a different beast, and when I was last there for a concert (Pearl Jam in Sept '22) it sounded great all the way across the floor in the lower bowl.

I've seen them in all sized venues, and my feeling is that they shine in theatres. Definitely my preferred size room. (Unless they want to play in my living room! 🤣)

It will be great tomorrow, but it's not yet sold out. I will love every second but cannot wait for the next smaller show.

I have no idea what the capacity for Homecoming is. I'm guessing that's not gonna be a "smaller" show than MSG.

Apparently they just announced on their socials that it is now sold out.

I know they're not the biggest band to play the Garden (and they don't attract the kind of rabid fanbase that is willing to camp overnight en masse), but I'm kind of disappointed that MSG isn't doing the GA wristband system for tomorrow's show. It's nice to just show up at like 9 a.m. for a numbered wristband and then be allowed to live my life until like an hour before doors.

Seeing that I'm commuting in two hours for the show, I'm currently trying to figure out how early is "too early" to get in line for GA.

I’ve been trying to hold my tongue and let this be a fun unpopular opinion chat but I can no longer abstain.

Vanderlyle is one of my least favorite songs. By any band. I left at least 3-4 shows during the acoustic finale over the span of that half-decade where they closed every show with Vanderlyle.

I also think England is one of their least good songs and they play it every time they’re in Los Angeles because of the lyric. Ayayay.

Getting there in the a.m. for a wristband is difficult for me. I "could" do it, and then hang out at my daughter's apt on the upper east side, but I've got things to do at home. Husband is not going, so he'll be home to take care of our dog and I can basically leave when I want once I get shit done, but, I also have no idea what time to get there. (I'm 1.5 hours away without traffic)

I got to Philly night 1 at 3:30pm and was #11 in the queue.

I got to Port Chester at 11:30am and was #5 in line, it didn't get crowded til after 4:30pm

My uneducated guess is, get ther by 4pm, and you should get rail. Unless, the T Swizzle fans show up... and they might.

So, I still have no idea what I'm doing tomorrow.

Hope that helps 😂

Vanderlyle on vinyl is beyond boring. Vanderlyle live is like going to the church of the national (I'm not at all religious, but I think you know what I mean)

Also, I may be a bit biased since Matt jumped into the crowd between my daughters and me at Forest Hills during Vanderlyle...

I know it’s a super special song/moment for people and I think the way they perform it and make it a ceremony for fans is v cool. For some reason though, Vanderlyle, England, and Runaway are three National songs I just can’t listen to and they are back to back to back on High Violet and 2 of 3 are in every live set I’ve seen for over 10 years.

I agree with the Vanderlyle closer. Maybe it's just been my own experiences at shows, but I never have been around a giant amount of people singing along - which is the entire point. And I'm usually near the front when I see them. I find it to be kinda too standard of a way for them to end, and not super interesting. I always prefer when they close with About Today.

As far as England goes, I always used to think it was easily one of their worst songs ever. But somehow it grew on me over time (think I've mentioned this before haha). Now I think it's pretty great, but not a favorite by any means. Runaway for me is an odd one cause when I first heard it I thought it was so boring. But then I saw them for the first time on the High Violet tour and they opened with it. I thought that was so interesting. And it made me really love it. I love the simplicity and the atmosphere of the very subdued guitar and slight drums with Matt's voice.

Side note re: Vanderlyle. When I saw The Rural Alberta Advantage years ago they did a similar thing to close their show with Good Night except the lead singer went into the audience with his guitar. There was like a big circle surrounding him. It felt really cool and actually communal - something Vanderlyle has never quite achieved for me.

For Runaway, I remember hearing it in that Q radio session that they put up on YouTube and thinking “Cool. Look forward to hearing how this fleshes out on their next record.” Then, the first time I heard High Violet, it came on and…it was almost exactly the same. Up to that point, National early demos and live songs were pretty notorious for being tweaked and tweaked before they finally became their album version but this one just kinda stayed in (IMO) rough sketch mode.
