Your week in music (last.fm collages...)

My week

I decided I wanted to learn more about punk so I did the most unpuni thing ever and just decided to listen to an album a week from the Rolling Stone list of best Punk albums. I have Give Me Convenience…. But that did not prepare me for the rockabilly urgency of the Dead Kennedys debut.

Punch Brothwrs still getting a lot of time. Working through the Hiss Golden Messenger Boxset. Jimi is the current 33 1/3 I’m reading.

I have to admit I slept on Billy Strings. That was a mistake.

Happy Birthday Runours.

I listened to Anerikinda on a whim and then spun it again. It’s quite nice and a long game grower.

Finishing up with some all time faves. Elvis was prompted by the DK cover of viva and Elvis inspired Dusty.

Breakdown
New album from Black Country, New Road is superb. Currently my AotY, displacing Amber Mark. Also really enjoying the newest from yeule, after a few relistens. New releases from Cate Le Bon, Animal Collective, Bas Jan, and tricot are enjoyable. Anaïs Mitchell's newest is kind of akin to colorful wallpaper; a worthwhile musical distraction. I feel similarly on Ghostly Kisses. Getting slowly through the vinyl collection playthrough as well.

I'm enjoying the new Spoon and BCNR album. The new Kim Petras EP is fun and has some great electronic sound. It made me listen to some of her earlier work.
I've also listened to a lot of Weezer, Madonna and Doja Cat this week. Beach House is great and I need to listen to more of their work. Still way behind with checking out new releases. I'll catch up in March.

Breakdown
Listened to the newest yeule frequently this week and feel certain that their newest album will land in my top50 by year's end. Newest one from Big Thief has a ridiculous album name, but it has a number of enjoyable tracks...I will have to revisit this one throughout the year to get an accurate read on it. Raveena delivers a solid debut; a pillowy, sensual contemporary R&B effort ending with 13.5 minute ambient/spoken word meditation piece. Trentemøller's newest is a choice recommendation for those who enjoy shoegaze/dream pop/post-punk and the like; an enjoyable hybrid of genres. Enjoyed the Tuareg world music from Imarhan as well. Empath was a bit forgettable. Other than that, continuing forward with the vinyl collection playthrough.
Great week overall.

Combine the Devo and Monophonics - Sound of Sinning comes in at #9. Devo is my “punk” exploration continued. DLO3 is a monster and will get a lot of spins when my vinyl shows up. New (old) Holy Hive is good but made me pine for the first album. New Moonchild is great. Soul Slabs is always great. New Nina Comp is perfectly serviceable. Wye Oak Civilian Anniversary edition is really good

Amos Lee and Brandi Carlile were a big comfort this week. Ghost Funk and Ikebe showed up because Colemine play through. Ghost Funk is still amazing all this time later. The new Holy Hive is much better on vinyl. Hey Janet, how ya doin? DLO3 may well end up being my most played this year. Kendra is a strong contender for top ten of the year.

Breakdown
Newest one from dream pop legends Beach House is acceptable, not great. Backtracked in the backlog to Ludovico Einaudi and can confidently say this one has a good shot at making my top50, high quality modern classical. A Place To Bury Strangers' newest was too cataclysmic and noisy on the first go around, and kind of left a sour taste. Curren$y was solid; another worthwhile Alcehmist collab. The newest from Foxes was pretty bland. Night Crickets was fine.
Spinning through the collection playthrough and a few current year favorites that landed at my doorstep this week otherwise.
