Definitive Audiophile pressings

Need a little advice for the Christmas List.

Any thoughts /advice on which is THE pressing of Tom Perry’s Full Moon Fever?

Thanks.
The Chris Bellman cut on either black wax or blue wax are pretty solid. I have the black but the blue I think is a more recent reissue and fairly easy to come by.

This is what I have…

Here’s the Blue wax…

I have the Blue, sounds pretty nice.

Well...all the recent Pink Floyd remasters were done from digital. You can do that in Lake Tahoe, or anywhere else. No need for the master tapes.

Thanks for playing. But, this type of snark is better at the Hoffman board.
Your assertion that the recent remasters were "done from digital" and that the master tapes were not needed confuses me, because it implies that the master tapes were not involved at all. Also, when you say Pink Floyd stated the tapes are "retired", who exactly do you mean? Because there are several persons involved, and they don't usually speak for each other. And when was it said, because things can be retired then unretired.

I ask because the labels on the 2016 remasters indicate they were "remastered from the original analogue tapes," see AnalogPlanet. And SuperDeluxeEdition reports the "vinyl reissues do use brand new remasters from the original analogue tapes, but they are not cut directly from analogue." This seems to mean the unnecessary and retired original analog tapes were in fact used to make the brand new digital remasters that were then used for the 2016 reissues.

But its still on their site for preorder? Somethings not adding up.

I'm still waiting on my order through Music Direct (ordered when first announced). They've definitely not distributed all the allocation, even if they have been pressed. My understanding was that they had to do a lot of represses for the first allocation.

The master tapes ALWAYS are involved in some element of any digital remaster, because ultimately following the chain the master tapes must have been the original source at some point.

In the case of the 2016 vinyl remasters, they were cut from digital files. Guthrie had the digital files and remastered for vinyl from those. There is a good argument that any time a new lacquer is created, it is a remastering. You can remaster from a flat digital transfer, you know. Happens all the time.

Tapes are 'retired' when the basically become unusable or in a condition such that use would cause risk. The master tapes of artists such as Pink Floyd are of very high value. Sure, there can always be a decision to use them again, but the risk that caused them to be retired only grows greater.

Thanks for responding, but this doesn't really answer my questions about your factual assertions. I linked to sources citing the record label itself, that Guthrie, Plante and Grundman used the original analog tapes to make the digital remaster from which the records were cut. You simply contradict this, with no support other than your own statement. And of course a decision can be made that tapes will no longer be used, but who said these tapes are retired and when? "Pink Floyd" doesn't really exist anymore, there are three individuals and a fourth's heir(s).

Your conclusion that we may never again see Pink Floyd vinyl cut from the original analog tapes might be correct, but you appear to be making up facts in support, and ignoring the whole reason this discussion started, that AS hinted a big announcement that more PF is on the way.

If Grundman had the tapes, why would he not have cut from those? He didn't have the tapes. Guthrie made a tape to digital transfer at some point prior, most likely to create the most up to date digital archive, which will henceforth be used as the master. So, to cut the 2016 vinyl, they used the digital file.

You do NOT need master tapes to remaster. You can, and often do, remaster from the flat archived digital file, which these days will often be a 32 bit file.

Anyways, I don't really care. I hate when this descents into SHF territory, replate with claims of having "inside"knowledge - the ultimate trope to deflect and shut down dissenting opinions.

The Pink Floyd tapes have not been retired, but they have been “archived to digital”. It doesn’t take much online detective work to find visual documentation of them being used on the array of Studers that reside at das boot. James Guthrie has publicly stated that he prefers to work in the analog(ue) domain as deep in to a project as feasible and only transfers to hi-res as the final step. These transfers are nearly always performed at his own studio. In the case of the 2016 vinyl James and Joel Plante performed the transfers from analog and BG cut the vinyl from those files. The transfers from tape were performed at das boot. Some people have even laid eyes and hands on the tapes while in the US.

This is a public forum. I'm not trying to shut down your opinion, I'm just trying to understand the factual basis that you asserted for it.

You stated a conclusion and alleged facts in support. When questioned about those facts, not opinions, you admit you don't know what happened and fall back onto generalizations. This despite a public record, not any insider information, that contradicts your assertions. Are you saying the record label and Fremer are being disingenuous? That wouldn't surprise me, but how do you know this?

Stop tossing out the Hoffman stuff, that's your trope when someone calls you on your claims that you know what's going on or dares to contradict you.

Like I said...I don't care. Your tone, and Marmck's rudeness last night - more suitable to the SHF forum - precludes any rational discussion, and just turns me, and I'm sure others, right off.

I'll make you an offer. I don't like you, and I don't like Marmck at all. I'll just ignore your posts and any either of you make to mine going forward. I have better things to do, and people to engage with.

Cool. You can go straight to arguments about tone. But I only asked substantive questions, which you never answered.

I see that your opinions are worse than baseless. They're based on facts you've made up to support them because you disagree with what the public record shows.

I too shall be ignoring your nonsense henceforth.

You do you (and probably best to stop speaking for others), but if you continue to make baseless factual statements that are demonstrably false then I will set the record straight. Not a difference of opinion, as you do not present your claims as opinions, but more just fact checking. Feel free to ignore me and live in your alternate reality, but I will present verified truths for others that may not know that your suppositions are not based in fact. Cool, let’s move on…

OK. I won't see your posts anymore, so don't bother replying.

BTW, Trump won the election. But you knew that already, right?

I had to double check I wasn't in the Politics thread for a sec

That being said, "Remastered from the Original Analogue Tapes" is becoming as grey as "Limited Edition"...........these arguments are pointless, only the main players know the absolute truth and everything else from "Joe Vinyl Aficionado" is opinion and speculation, but worth good hearted discussions.

Buy XYZ, toss it on your platter, if YOU like the way it sounds, nothing else matters.
