Vinyl Me Please Essentials

I'm not the biggest fan of The xx yet I feel like, given the alternatives mentioned in this and the prior thread, this is the best case scenario for my tastes.

I love that album by The xx. But is there any reality where that is even in the same stratosphere as Merriweather? Not to get all grandiose here, but MPP is in that handful of albums that had me questioning my stance as a staunch agnostic.

I think it also works with the clue. You have 4 band members that all go by monikers outside their birth names (ala superhero names), and the "blockbuster" hint would certainly fit with Fireworks. I'm undeniably trying to will this in as the ROTM, but it feels like 50-50 to me between MPP and xx. Both great choices, but one of them is almost enough to make me forgive the Forum debacle.

Probably an unpopular opinion, but AC has never clicked for me.

I actually think it's a pretty common opinion. They have always struck me as a "Love 'em or hate 'em" band. For years I thought they were pretentious garbage (looking at you, campfire songs) and hated most their early work, but then I heard Banshee Beat and it all clicked into place after that.

xx for me is one of the top 3 to 5 records of this century. not that I want it to be the ROTM - I really really REALLY don’t need to start buying colour variants of my favourite albums

True, but we didn't ever nail down that first picture, and were just kind of assuming it was another picture of an x-men. For all we know it's a picture of fireworks.
Yeah, I recall that Storf said that no one had solved the first picture clue after guesses it was a picture of Phoenix from the X-Men, which makes me think it's not going to be Phoenix the band. But Fireworks is on Strawberry Jam, from 2007, so I don't think that fits either.

I think that first pic clue is still unsolved, and may be the key to it all. Or maybe it's an image from a blockbuster film of 2009, and since no one figured it out they just gave us the year.

Personally, I'd be really happy with Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix if that's what it ends up being (which looks real likely now). I may have a different experience with Phoenix than others in that I first heard them in about 2003 courtesy of hearing "If I Ever Feel Better" on Erlend Oye's DJ Kicks album. This lead me to listen to United and Alphabetical, which were fun listens. My favourite album of theirs got released a few years after, and It's Never Been Like That still stands as one of my favourite indie/guitar pop albums ever. WAP is kind of a culmination of that, and it does have some great tunes outside of the singles, like "Lasso" and 'Armistice".

For those that are going to listen to Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix for the first time and may-or-may-not be digging it, definitely also check out It's Never Been Like That. It's a little less glossy and a little more guitar-driven, but jangly and catchy like the best indie pop is.

Before they dropped the 2009 hint, I was trying to make Strawberry Jam work, so yeah, I was combing the two. Now I'm not sure MPP works as well. Leaning more towards The xx - s/t now. The 3 images were of 2 guys and a girl as well... just like The xx.
