Record Store Day 2021

I had a really interesting chat with my local dealer , the upfront costs of RSD releases to small businesses are staggering ...they have no idea of what will actually sell on the day and the crapshoot of online sales from 6pm is a nightmare as the whole world does the same.. they are just grateful to break even over the first weekend and then hope they shift some additional product..what was more interesting is the “regulars” like me are a very small number , only 18 of us put in any kind of wish list to help with the orders ...when I queue up by 3am I’m lucky to be in the top 20..by 8am there’s normally a few hundred people behind me ...that’s the problem for stores ..who are these on the day punters and will they show up ?
When I mentioned prices going up the other day my local dealer told me on the phone they are getting killed on pricing by middle men distributors and that the big name distributors have seemed to just stop caring about anything. The store is as busy as ever but there is always a breaking point. I hope @RHANDMJ might see this and comment as he seems to have some good in's and perspective out there.

I’ve heard the same. I’ll just say I don’t envy these store owners having to make decisions on stock, RSD,etc.

My local has a great owner, buyer, and cultivated staff, so they seem to have a good handle on it (that and knowing your customer base I'm sure is important), I don't ever see much RSD leftovers there tbh unless its high priced stuff. They did take a bit to get on the Tone Poet and BN Classic train though, but after BN 75 who could blame them.
