Ambient / Noise / Lowercase / Field Recordings / etc.

@dropsonde

Not the same label, but (I think this is the only place you can get this record in the us customs free.

Thanks, I’ll check ‘em out!

Posted in the Pre-Order Thread, but worthy of it's own post here.

This new Sufjan is actually pretty decent if you like droning ambient.

it reminds me of Eno's Music for Films meets Belong's October Language

i was a pretty big fan of the ascension last year, even if some people didn’t like it.

seeing all the descriptions surrounding this project are making me excited to dig into this!! will probably pre-order it soon as well

I wasn’t a huge fan of The Ascension, overall, but the title track from it is one of Sufjan’s best songs. I’m excited about this one because my expectations were very low thinking it would be a lot like Aporia or more straightforward electronic like The Ascension. The fact he went more ambient is so unexpected.

Looking to add more ambient music on vinyl to my collection. It's more for my wife than me; she loves the genre.
I have some Tim Hecker, Brian Eno, William Basinski, Nils Frahm...I think that's about it. Her favorite is Eno of those artists, so who else is in that vein of ambient?

Edit: Currently browsing the Past Inside the Present label site on Bandcamp, seems promising.

I'd say Harold Budd and Laraaji. They are a part of the Ambient series.

Also a favorite I have discovered recently on the Superior Viaduct label (a recommendation from @dropsonde, thank you!). The first track is a breathtaking piece spanning over 23 minutes. Second track is also wonderful. The third track is a little more experimental than she might like, though. Overall, it might run more avant-garde, but I still recommend the entire work. Let me know what you think.

YESSS love PITP

This is a great album from them

I also recommend this other Pausal album on a different label

Other recommendations in the vein of Eno:

A Winged Victory for the Sullen - s/t

this is my favorite album of all time.

Eluvium - Copia

Other Eluvium albums are excellent too, "Pianoworks", "False Readings On" all good stuff.

Last but not least. My personal favorite uncovered gem of a band Willamette

Looks like all their records are sold out but discogs prices are very reasonable.

Harold Budd
Ambient 2 is one of my all time favorite albums. Highly, highly, recommend.

I concur, @wokeupnew!

Thanks for the awesome list. I'm leaning to Winged Victory after sampling some of each this morning. I'll probably wait until the next Bandcamp royalty free day.

awesome!

Check out their other albums too. I'm not as big of a fan of their later stuff. It's good but that first album is perfect IMO.

Also what Eno do you already have? He has very varied styles, depending on what your wife likes there could be something else similar.

Lastly, I should have recommended Olafur Arnalds. Since you mentioned Nils Frahm, they go hand and hand (and have collaborated together).

This reminds me I meant to suggest Stars of the Lid as well. (Another duo with Wiltzie from AWVFTS.)

Stars of the Lid are a step beyond some others in my book. Even though that particular album is much more kind than other SotL albums, that one is more entry level. Asking someone to sit with a 2 hour album can be a lot  I struggled with them for a long time before it finally clicked. Now I'd consider them an all time favorite.

Ambient/drone fans, new project from Growing. Their first in 4 years. This is much more chill than previous Growing releases, which were more oscillations and drone and noise than this one. This one is lush and beautiful....

3 diff vinyl variants available:

I recently got Michael Peter Olsen's new album, Yearning Flow, which I've really been digging.

Helios is great also, as well as his project with his wife called Mint Julep (although I would say Mint Julep is more shoegaze)
