Sexy M.F.'ers...The Prince Fan Thread

I mentioned a bunch of magazines (besides the ones w/ 7''s!) a bit ago.

I have to say, I am thoroughly impressed with the Uncut Ultimate Guide

I would suggest any fan get this. No advertisements and it is quite large. Besides a bunch of photos, of course, the content is really good. It has smaller stuff like chronicling all of Prince's backing bands, the different proteges, even a journalist reminiscing what it was like to interview him (there were rules!), etc.

But the real meat is that it goes through every single studio album, live albums, compilations, etc. and gives background, an overall score, and a track-by-track score. With S&H it came out to ~$21 to get to a U.S. address.

@NathanRicaud I don't know if you could get it sent to Australia (don't see why you couldn't) but I think you would especially dig the track-by-track breakdown. It reminds me of when we were discussing albums like Musicology and 3121 and you were naming particular tracks. Of course, no one has to agree w/ the ratings but it is a cool guide and really well done..

I am thoroughly impressed with it and all the content you get for the price. It is also well-bound/put together and has a collector's feel to it.
I second this....mine arrived a little damaged but overall a great piece.

I received my RS issue but still waiting on the Musikexpress. Supposedly on back order and not been charged

I may be incorrect, but I believe purchase of the box set comes w/ a 20% off for future store purchases? If anyone has one and, of course, doesn't think they want to use it - maybe you can DM it to me?

EDIT: Disregard. I found an old reddit post where someone put a code that gave 15% off and it still worked.

Making my way through the SOTT box set. Loving what I’m hearing! Well, All My Dreams, not so much, there was a reason that was left off 😬
I LOVE All My Dreams. Love the creativity and how it sort of disintegrates and reappears before your eyes. It just shows you that people get different things from Prince.

So I’m slowly working my way thru the big cd box set of “sign..”..the remaster was so good I’ve spent a month playing that ..I loaded up the singles disc and 1st vault CD today ,....played that three times ..it gets better and better

Bloody hell fire ...that 1st vault disc is superb..Witness for the prosecution..how the fudge did he leave that unreleased ..the super long Power Fantastic ..the Miles Davis track..All my dreams ...Jesus he was good

And I’ve still got two more vault discs and a double live cd and a live dvd to go ..

Release of the year easily

I fully agree. I’m going to say it’s the best archival release I can think of: his estate have done a great job here.

Well....I need a distraction from the American sideshow (aka election night), so I'll give some thoughts on the live content (Utrecht and the '87 Paisley Park show).

First of all, both of them are great. The audio source is nice. The video for the PP '87 DVD isn't spectacular but it's also concert footage from 1987 and didn't have the same effort put into it as the actual SOTT film; regardless, it's a great watch..

I'll get this out of the way and totally a quench to the thirst - both Cat Glover and Sheila E. are smoking. That one bare leg, one covered thing they had going on back then is nice.

Anyway...what I really noticed was how well-formed Prince was as a band leader. Sure, he headed The Revolution; but how he was up on stage there was a fully-realized funk band leader a la James Brown.

I also dig how he molded older songs to the musicians he had with him. The touring band had expanded by then with the addition of horns and on the Utrecht version of Little Red Corvette, for example, it was cool to hear the addition of horn stabs. Some of those older songs were definitely given a fresh makeover. It also foreshadowed the sound Prince would transition into - at least live - in his later years as an elder statesman of funk. His later live years were definitely much more "traditional" sounding, if that makes sense. While his earlier sound had that Minneapolis sound he pioneered with the synths doing the heavy lifting of the horns, he started to migrate to different sounds here. As well, there were variations in songs where you just feel like Prince was having fun and didn't want to be stale playing the same thing night-after-night on tour (not so much for the audience, but for himself). For example, the opening of Sign o the Times on Utrecht has the song dirtied up with a lot of crunchy guitar.

It was funny, too, while listening to it - either the DVD or the Utrecht - I was kind of reminded of jam bands. Not the sound, but kind of the approach to the continual presentation of music and the seamless transitions. There were tracks listed where it's like "Oh, I'm going to hear this song" and you blink and you'll have missed it because he maybe plays the intro of that song or the chorus and goes into something else. But I've noticed that with a lot of, especially later, live Prince when his catalog grew so large. But the segues never feel forced or leave your head spinning - rather, it's a master craftsman who put a lot of preparation into making your head spin.

I will say this....Miles Davis. I love jazz. I love Miles Davis. But it's worthless. I say this, not because it doesn't have worth in the fact that it happened. I mean, I imagine it's just that Miles was hanging at PP and Prince was, like, "Hey, you wanna jam with us tonight or play basketball?" and Miles was like "I don't play basketball so we'll jam...either way, there better be pancakes". So, I have no problem with it being captured on the performance, in so much that it happened and is a fact of history. I just find it worthless I so much that I probably saw it mentioned in most write-ups and selling points of this set. Heck, I think I even saw it referred to as "legendary". It is not legendary. It is a footnote. It is a curiosity. It does NOT, however, elevate either musician, nor the song (It's Gonna Be a Beautiful Night). Don't get me wrong - still an awesome performance and I have no issue with Miles coming out on stage for the couple minutes he was out there; but it wasn't awesome or more awesome because of Miles and wouldn't have suffered if he never came out. It was a status quo performance and it was not two legendary performers playing off of one another. Again, my issue was just how much it was mentioned in advertisements as if it mattered.

All in all, awesome live sets.

So made it thru the second vault disc ..again , some amazing stuff that he just sat on ...loving Blanche , soul psychdelicide , the alt forever in my life ...how good is this reissue ..
Not including the legacy reissues and just the one's thus far that have included extra material (Purple Rain, 1999, SOTT)….this wipes the floor. And not just because SOTT is my fave of the lot. Just what has been provided is so good. Okay, 1999 isn't that far behind. It has a lot of great stuff too.

Got my Musik Express issue today. No invoice to pay so I guess I’ll just wait for it

Recently, I stumbled upon a playlist on Spotify titled Prince Slow Jams. It was a fun little list comprised of some truly deep cut classics.

It got me thinking, if you were to compose a mini playlist of songs in this same vein, what would they be?

Initial thoughts for me are:
1. Eye Love U, But Eye don’t trust U Anymore - off the Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic album
2. Arms of Orion - off the Batman sdtk
3. How Come U Don’t Call Me Anymore - off the 1999 album
4. Adore - off Sign O the Times
5. Damn U - off Love Symbol
6. Dark - off the Come EP
7. Extraordinary - off the Vault album

‘That’s off the top of my head. Would love to see what you lot think would go on the playlist.

Add Slow Love from SOTT, Mellow from RC, Beautiful Ones from PR, and It from SOTT. The latter two aren’t necessarily “slow jams” per se but they’re getting down to business and setting the mood songs for sure. *Also I guess depends if you’re holding it to deep cuts

You call it the “Come EP”. Is there an EP w that name I’m not tracking? Cause it’s like 50 min long. And I’m not trying to “getcha” with some stupid technicality. I’m wondering if I’m legit not tracking some release.

These are all great! I thought about putting The Beautiful Ones on the list (as its my favorite Prince song) but was going more the deep cuts route. But really, any of these are stone cold grooves.

You know, you're 100% correct. I know its an actual studio album from his Purple Majesty but for some reason, in my mind, I've always thought of it as an EP. I have no idea why, due to the length and the number of songs. Its just always stuck in my head that way.

Because of the mention I'm listening to Come at work today. A lot of the sounds - especially some of the synths & drum machine stuff - are dated in the early '90s. But the dark funk sound of the album is good. Loose! is on now and it is stupid funky and going hard.

Yes! I am glad our conversation has you revisiting the album. I believe it’s one of his seriously underrated offerings. Dark funk is a a very apt descriptor for the overall feel of the album. Letitgo is another one of those tracks that I feel deserves more attention than it gets.

Yea, Dark is actually playing while I type this. Great use of vocal harmonies - Gospel-inspired sound; nice interplay of that slow jam to uplifting breakaways; great horn parts.

Weakest track so far has been Race. It's not bad per se but is def surrounded by stronger songs. Really liked Papa following up Loose!

The title track is maybe a bit long but really sets up the overall mood of the album - can't escape the ticking of the drum machine.

The vocals on Solo are great. This is aided by the sparse instrumentation, of course. But you really hear Prince's voice shine here in an understated way (i.e. not hitting his screeching falsetto to impress the listener but just singing competently through his range); the vibrato on his notes is great. I'd be hard-pressed to think of another track where his voice is given so much breathing room.
