The N&G Top 500 Albums of All Time!!!

Absolutely, I anticipate at least 10 of my top 50 to not be anywhere near the top 500 of a master list. They’re either wildly unpopular or completely unheard of.

Equally I expect a chunk of mine to be lower down because the forum is largely American so, a bit like in that Rolling Stone list, some of the British ones, outside the the obvious, may get buried.

I like this, the intention behind making the list private is simply because of the exact herd mentality you mention and I want people to be comfortable submitting a list that doesn’t mention David Bowie or Prince instead of just thinking “well shit, I learned a long time ago that it’s not a top 100 if it ain’t got Bowie, better throw him on here somewhere”. No offense to anybody here but people are a lot less independent thinking than we assume, and I 100% realistically include myself in that group.
I can basically guarantee there won't be any Beatles albums in my top 50 and I'll shout it from the goddamn rooftops. I don't care, it's my damn list, that's the point.

Right, so in this case the end result would likely be a mirror of a stereotypical “top of” list because of popularity. My assigned points idea is to allow for individual voices to be heard a little more based on how passionate they are about a particular album.

And I can proudly shout out that there will be no Pink Floyd within a billion miles of mine, if only I could award minus points...

I don’t agree sorry, I’ve always hated that type of scoring...

That’s why I’d prefer if we more or less agreed to list our personal favorites. The fun of this exercise will be to see how different our tastes actually are once we are forced to pick favorites.

I’m going to use this thread as an excuse to put together a top 100 list, whether it gets used here or not. Fifty is just not enough.

Also, I’m in favor of listing live albums. You could say that’s unfair because they’re akin to a greatest hits compilation, but the reality is that a vast majority of live albums are a drag while others are arguably the artist’s most essential work (e.g. Nirvana, Talking Heads, and others). The worst that can happen is that something like Live Rust could end up oddly high, which is not exactly a problem.

Why not make this the anything goes list? I mean, as long as it’s available at 33rpmwhy limit live, greatest hits, soundtracks etc. This list should be a uniquely N&G list and doesn’t need justification for what it is or isn’t. That way we get a truer representation of our members rather than just another best albums list.
Whatever is decided i’m In and Animals FTW! 😁

I like this logic.

Prince’s 1984 Birthday soundboard show is now on the list!

I think 100 makes sense, standardized points for each spot. No GH or Comps, soundtracks only if they are essentially proper albums by a singular artists. Live albums are tricky, because the live albums in the Grateful Dead Canon, for example, usually highlighted songs not on other albums and functioned as the "album" release for that period.

I'd be excited to compile this list.
