Everything Video Games!

Thanks. I don't remember the music on those NES games, it's been so long since I've played them, I'll have to check them out. I really need to get around to Tropical Freeze and Yooka Laylee. I think I have the first YL for free on PC.
Both Yooka-Laylee games are in the same universe, but are completely different. The first is a 3D platformer paying massive tribute to Banjo-Kazooie. I liked it, but it got some mixed reviews. The sequel is a 2D platformer with an interactive and explorable hub world, a la Donkey Kong.

Weird little retro games sale on Woot for anyone looking to snag anything from NES and SNES games to a refurb Wii U.

Some good gems in there, even if the prices are a little high.

Making steady progress on the Dark Souls front. Gaping Dragon is long dead, and I went back to Undead Asylum. Got the items there, beat the Stray Demon (bleed damage WRECKS that one) and headed back. Killed the Hydra and made my way to Blightown. I can see why people struggle a bit here, but I didn't find it too bad. I did know about the poison stuff ahead of time, and I'm playing the Remastered version on Switch, which has none of the lag issues I heard the original is plagued with, so that alone probably changes everything. I got to Quelaag's lair, but those little worm things messed me up through a combination of not knowing what to expect/having sucky except for poison resistance armor, and my weapon trajectory not hitting them consistently. Fortunately the bonfires nearby so it's easy enough to experiment.

I still have nightmares about those knights that shoot arrows at you on the Anor Londo roofs.

those damn rumors of a new Switch coming out next year are really starting to pop up again. the question seems to be will it be another revision or a Switch Pro?
The only "upgrade" console I've ever bought after owning a previous version was the DS Lite. A Switch Pro with more horsepower and more games would get me to upgrade in a heartbeat.

Can anyone speak to the Xbox X vs S ?
My guess is it would be something similar. Maybe games could just show more polished and have 4K capabilities but not make customers miss out on top tier games bc their system can’t play it.

I have a day one edition One and an X. The X is a very noticeable improvement all around. Games and videos look better utilizing 4k, and load times are noticeably different. Final Fantasy 15 and Ori and the Will of the Wisps are good examples, load times were almost twice as fast on the X for both games. Looking at the comparisons between the S and the X, it looks like X does native 4k and the S can upscale to 4K. Probably not super noticeable unless you have them side by side, especially on games not designed for native 4k. Pretty big difference on price between the two as well. Not sure if the price is worth the upgrade from the S, but I'd recommend it if you have an original One.

FWIW, the refurbished market is pretty good too, I bought my X that way at a pretty good discount. I've had it a year and a half with no issues.

I think you’re saying what I’m assuming, in that you can sell both consoles and not exclude the market.

so this potential 4K switch would be backwards compatible but just be the superior way to experience games. Although there could be requirements to have a 4K switch to play the newer versions of third party titles like AC or even COD, since the og switch is much lesser as far as power than going form x to s on Xbox.

I think this would be great. You saw Nintendo didn’t do too much with the n3dsxl exclusivities so I can’t imagine they would have a wildly different approach from that.

Real close to finishing Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair. I've got 100% of the bees, coins, and 61/62 of the tonics (last one's impossible and not needed for achievements). I'm working my way through the Impossible Lair now, didn't expect it to be as challenging as it is. For those not in the know, you can challenge it from the beginning, but will likely lose, though beating it there gives that final tonic. After that, you play all the normal levels to collect bees, that basically count as a hit you can take in the Lair. There are 48 in the game to collect, and even with that many hits, I still haven't gotten all the way through. In the lair itself, there are several checkpoints, and each one you hit saves your best "bee score." Essentially, you can start from that checkpoint with the amount of remaining bees you had at the checkpoint from previous runs. This also means you can go back and replay parts to improve those scores and better your chances later on. It's honestly a really cool mechanic, but sometimes a tough choice as to where you want to start your run each time.

I think I'll do a more in depth review of the whole game once I finish it.

I haven’t started it yet. Thank for reminding me I have it lol

a friend of mine has been playing it and he told me he's not sure if he'd ever beat the impossible lair. sounds like it's pretty hard because he's usually pretty good at most games.

Just finished the Witcher 3 last night! It was pretty decent. I wouldn't claim it as one of the best games ever but it was good. Controls and story were a little wonky at first but once I started to level up it got significantly easier. The story itself was good, but the game felt short. If I didn't try to do any of the side quests and discover pretty much all of the locations on the 4 maps, the whole main story would probably be over in 15-20 hours or so.

Also, a pet peeve of mine, I hate when you finally level up and get the best skills in any game and then all of the sudden the game is over and you never really got to use those skills. The last several games I've played have been this way; The Witcher, Assassin's Creed Odyssey (If I didn't buy the DLC), all the Bioshock games, some others too.

Next I'm planning on playing A Plague Tale: Innocence. It's got some decent reviews and I like hack and slash story games like that, also it being on Game Pass is a plus. Has anyone played it before?

man. I couldn't get enough of Witcher 3. I didn't jump into either of the DLC packs after beating it but I do hope to get back to them at some point but I got quite the backlog.

I started Outlast the other night and probably have only put in a little over an hour into it. I made sure to play with headphones and all the lights off and the game is definitely tense as hell but pretty cool. aside from that I'm playing Slayaway Camp when I don't have a lot of time and want to try and knock off a few micro puzzles. it's definitely a fun game with a rather amusing take on 80's horror with over the top violence in a cutesy package.

Never really played a Paradox strategy game before but I'm really hyped to try out Crusader Kings 3, reviews for it are insanely positive haha. Gamepass coming through once again as a ridiculously good deal. Anyone here give it a go yet?

I played a little over an hour yesterday, but as a neophyte there is a lot to absorb even in the tutorial. It certainly seems promising.

Played A Plague Tale a few months ago and really liked it. Finished it in under a week. It's definitely more stealth and puzzle than hack and slash.

Yup, I'm through chapter 3 already and it's pretty fun and the story is super engrossing. I saw it labeled as "hack and slash" somewhere so that's what I thought it was. It doesn't seem like it will take too long to finish, but that's okay. So far so good.

It is quite challenging, probably the hardest thing I've completed this year (and I'm half-ish way through Dark Souls for reference). Fortunately the way it's structured allows for small gradual progress. I actually finished it this morning. The final section is by far the easiest imho, it's a pure speed level, but the platforming isn't too tricky if you pay attention to the cues. I did it first try with 2 bees, ended up taking only 1 hit in the whole section.
