also did he just ignore sonny rollins made the classic way out west? that was 5 years before the bridge and that album made him considered the best saxaphonist of the time

Storf does not know much about jazz, he has admitted so himself. It is sorta insulting to reference him playing with Coltrane to give him some kind of cred. A better descriptor would be, 'considered among the greatest Saxophone players of all time, alongside Gordon, Shorter, Coltrane, and Mobley.' If I forgot anyone I apologize.

VMP, you can hire me to write sentence long descriptions better than Storf's for the low low price of one free Classics track for life. 😜💪❤

Yeah, that comment made no sense.

Rollins was considered the best tenor by many when he had the run of Tenor Madness > Saxophone Colossus > Way Out West > A Night @ The Village Vanguard > Freedom Suite. And then he retired for 3 or 4 years until his comeback with The Bridge in 1962. smh.

Point is Storf did our man Sonny dirty, but if its anything outside of Stax I guess he gets a pass. He is just the editor in chief of the best damn record club period, why should he know about more than just one specific label?

and literally i got the entire thing about sonny rollins being the best to many before coletrane from wikipedias description of the allmusic review...

you can't be a decent enough jazz fan and NOT know about way out west.. its one of the prime pre kind of blue albums along with charlie parker, louis armstrong, and duke ellington.

It's a shame because Way Out West would have actually made a better Classics pick.

I agree, although I am very happy with Freedom Suite being picked to receive the AAA, 180g, QRP treatment as it's a superb record, that was in need of a reissue! It's definitely one of the best Classics picks ever in my opinion! Sonny Rollins' Freedom Suite, McCoy Tyner's Sahara, Otis Redding's The Immortal Otis Redding & Erroll Garner's Magician are all 10/10 picks for me! All incredible albums! 💎

I think all the other VMP Classics ROTM's are actually all very good as well, even though many of them aren't what we are used to seeing in the 'Classics' track! Mr. Hands by Herbie Hancock is instrumentally such a joy to listen to! The last track on that album "Textures" is a galactic, futuristic, spacey, smooth, velvety gem! Patrice Rushen like I've said many times is such a great record too! I love spinning the Albert King ROTM too! The instrumentation and Albert King's vocals are superb on that release! The Bar-Kays Money Talks sounds superb apparently and I cannot wait to spin it! I love the super funky, juicy, snappy, sharp tracks on that release! Even though it's my least favourite Classics ROTM this year, and probably my least favourite Classics ROTM ever, I'm still happy with it! I'm happy VMP did an exclusive of 'Cold Blooded', which I do agree with most people and think that should've been the Classics ROTM!
 
I really hope VMP decide to make Sister Sledge's We Are Family a Classics ROTM one day! So many great hits on that album, and Nile Rogers production on that album is incredible! The album was released in the 70's and if VMP made an 80's Patrice Rushen album a Classics ROTM, I have hope they'll do a disco album like We Are Family! 🤞

Also, with the next few VMP Classics ROTM's being jazz, but jazz that's very different to Sonny Rollins' Freedom Suite, maybe we'll get some Roy Ayers! I'd love Vibrations or He's Coming to get the Classics treatment! That would be absolutely incredible! :love:😵🙉

Also, where are all my Lonnie Liston Smith Expansions fans at! 🙋‍♀️🙋‍♂️ That would be one cool, breezy, earthy lush ROTM pick! 🌚🌝🦚

I'm looking really forward to seeing what those next few Classics ROTM picks are! 🐽😃

Also worth noting that Sonny Rollins HATED recording his music and much prefered the open improvisation which live performances allowed for. He would even take 1-hour solo's which just were not feasible for recorded music. I personally think his live recordings (A Night At The Village Vanguard being my fave) are all the better for it, and even with these he was having to stick to timeslots and would be nervous knowing it was being recorded. I would have loved to see him live.
 
what do you think the other 2 jazz months will be... free jazz (and by free i mean more free than oriental jazz), fusion (very likely), hard bop, bebop, big band (a duke ellington album would actually be a great idea), third stream, modal jazz

Life time by Tony Williams, Moon Beams by Bill Evans, or something by Weather Report.

I've got the Way Out West Craft box and it's very nice, I don't know that it's AAA but it's pretty solid.

Yeah I agree with these as fusion picks (maybe Mahavishnu Orchestra as well). I was thinking something by Herbie Hancocks group's, Mwandishi, VSOP, maybe Headhunters, but seeing as there is an Anthology Box Set coming soon I kind of ruled that out.

I have that as well, fantastic pressings. I like the alternative takes as well.
