July 2020 Record Challenge (The Raffle Strikes Back)

Day 26 - IT'S NOT ABOUT WHO DID IT FIRST, BUT WHO DID IT BETTER: Play an album with a great cover song/songs on it

Rufus feat. Chaka Kahn - Rags to Rufus

I got a little too obsessed with this song, its previous versions and future samples and posted about it at the link below haha. Love watching the evolution of this song from the early 1900s to Dre sampling it, super cool.

I keep falling behind 😓 lol
DAY 25
BREVITY IS THE SOUL OF WIT
Otoboke Beaver - Itekoma Hits
This album is so awesome. So much energy and ferocity packed into a neat, punchy 26 minutes. Even though it's a short album, it definitely doesn't leave you underwhelmed. It's such a fun, chaotic experience. The more I spin this the more I feel it deserved a spot on my year end list last year.

DAY 26
IT'S NOT ABOUT WHO DID IT FIRST, BUT WHO DID IT BETTER
The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Electric Ladyland
I know a lot of people on this forum love Dylan but if you try to tell me the original version of "All Along the Watchtower" is superior to Jimi's reinterpretation... then I will respect your opinion but personally disagree 😇

This also has the benefit of being one of the greatest rock albums ever recorded. In my estimation, it stands out among many of the "classics" and transcends the competition. It's a shame Hendrix's career was cut short so early but he left behind a hell of a library.

Day 26: Cover

I have complete cover albums, but this has been in my "need to play" stack for a few days.

JULY 26
IT'S NOT ABOUT WHO DID IT FIRST, BUT WHO DID IT BETTER
Play an album with a great cover song/songs on it

I'm going with TH's rendition of Take me to the river.

Edit: I like to think everyone knows this album but, in any case, it's:

Talking Heads - More songs about buildings and food

26 - Covers

I suspect today may have been aimed at me, haha. The pressure is on. Does the man even own any covers is the silent question. I present to you the greatest cover band there ever was! Every album has covers on it but this one was selected because it’s one of the best albums they produced (imho) and it was on the listening shelf. The two songs I am sure are covers are In My Time of Dying (Dylan) and Trampled Under Foot (Johnson), which happen to be fan favorites.

Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti

Day 23 - uncharted territory

I like this day’s theme a lot. I always appreciate it when established artists try something new, and I find myself coming back to those albums a lot even if they’re not perfect (Adore, Trans, Boarding House Reach come to mind). Sometimes, they are perfect though:

Wikipedia tells me that’s not accurate, but Zeppelin being Zeppelin I’m sure there are other “borrowed” tunes in this album. Great record anyway.
In My Time Of Dying is a traditional, but Blind Willie Johnson was the (maybe?) first recording. Trampled Underfoot lyrics are apparently inspired by Robert Johnson's Terraplane Blues. So yeah, normal Zeppelin "originals" :ROFLMAO:

JULY 26 - Covers
Luna - Lunafied
Luna has always had great taste in covers. This compilation collects most of them over 2 records. I am not going to say these covers are all better than the original, but the 1st album has 4 killer tracks starting things off: Bonnie & Clyde, Indian Summer, Ride Into The Sun, That's What You Always Say.

IT'S NOT ABOUT WHO DID IT FIRST, BUT WHO DID IT BETTER

Juliana Hatfield Sings Olivia Newton John

AEBB2E7D-A814-4184-B8C5-2729AC815CAF.jpeg
Growing up in the 70’s, Olivia Newton John’s music was inescapable. Which was not a bad thing! This album pays great homage to an underrated artist, lovingly and not at all in an ironic way. It’s also incredibly soothing in times like these.

CATCH UP!! Here we go!

Day 20 - I make more noise than heavy metal

Power of Zeus "The Gospel According to Zeus"

Ok not exactly metal but as close as I can get, has the Sabbath vibes so that's a plus...

Day 21 - Hippa to the Hoppa and ya just don't Stoppa!

Company Flow "Funcrusher Plus"

The best version of El-P for my money! Love this record, it never gets old and still feels fresh to this day!

Day 22 - You Gots to Chill

Diplo "Florida"

Some blazing downtempo from an unexpected source! This is the last time I checked for this guy I assume he didn't do anything after this....

MORE CATCH-UP!

Day 23 - That's Different... Are you trying something new? Are you ok?

3FADD3A3-FF51-4F36-B619-3C16094C01EE.jpeg

Sleater-Kinney "The Center Won't Hold"

There was an attempt, not sure it worked out like they wanted! They lost a drummer and probably some fans but they went for it! It's not a bad record, it's a bad SK record IMHO

Day 24 - I love it LOUD

7A701EF2-8D8E-44B1-A9F4-723F80DF93FF.jpeg

Metz "Metz"

Best played at high volume preferably in a residential area!

Day 25 - Short and Sweet
