July 2020 Record Challenge (The Raffle Strikes Back)

Day 12
Curse words

I’ve told this story before, but when I was fourteen I somehow smooth talked my mom into buying my first cassette copy of this album at Roses. The stickers were new and the Bible Belt decided you had to be 17 like for a movie. Still no idea what exactly I said to my very conservative and religious mother to buy me the record with skulls on a cross and a clear indication that she wouldn’t like the content...

Also, I’ve read the complaints on Discogs but I have to say this sounds really good for free.
Correction, the length of side one does no favors to Paradise City.

Day 12 - Thanks, Tipper Gore

Man, if Tipper thought Darling Nikki was too sexually explicit, would love to see her face during the “slob on my knob” verse 😂

Also, it turns out that Get on Down omitted the sticker on this reissue (it’s not under the hype sticker either), so here’s the the Tear Da Club Up ‘97 single for good measure (note “Da Club” in the background 😀):

Day 9 Catch up!

JUST GIVE IT TIME

Theatre Of Pain ~ Motley Crue

I am not the biggest Motley fan truth be told, but my friend gave me this one as a prize winning in her youtube contest. I have Girls, Girls, Girls but even then I rarely gets playtime. I need to be in the mood overall for some Crue, BUT this album is the one execption. I never tire of this album. It has just enough of what I wanna get outta Crue.

I don’t think my wife is too pleased, after Appetite, I slapped down my og version of this. Also, you’re crazy, I can listen to Girls Girls Girls all the time. I have to be in the mood for this one. I also like Dr Feelgood slightly more than this one.

But none of those are Too Fast For Love. That album is indisputably perfect.

You know, I’ve had that copy of Theatre of Pain since 1988 and I don’t think I ever noticed that the song list on the back cover is in alphabetical order. What in the flying hell?

A day late...

DAY 11 - COMPANION

Tobin Sprout, Carnival Boy.
Released the same day by the same company as Robert Pollard's Not In My Airforce when Tobin was still a member of Guided By Voices.
I'd say this qualifies as a companion album, right?

Day 11 Catch up!

TOUGH ACT TO FOLLOW

Nevermind ~ Nirvana

I had about three in mind including this. I was either going to play Chicago II or Riot. I decided on Nevermind because it's been a hot minute since I listened to it. I am not the biggest Nirvana fan.... truth be told I only have this pressing because it was a gift LOL

Day 12 Finally CAUGHT UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THANKS, TIPPER GORE

Going To Hell ~ The Pretty Reckless

This was a personal grail for so long. I am so glad to FINALLY have this. If you saw my post about it in Fresh Pickups, I had a near heart attack when it was nearly water damaged! Still I am so glad to have this in the collection!

DAY 13
MONDAY THE 13TH
Blur - 13
Pretty much the perfect album for this theme. And it wouldn't be my challenge thread if I didn't find a way to play two Damon albums back to back. This album is a masterpiece, but there's absolutely no reason "Tender" needs to be 8 minutes long. Other than that, I can't find many flaws with this album, it's probably their weirdest and most alien-sounding album, listening to it it's crazy to think it's the same band who made Parklife just five years prior. It's equal parts a melancholy break-up album and a surreal dive into experimental, noisy, spacey rock music.

Sidenote: have you ever noticed the 13 on the cover also makes a capital "B" for Blur? 🤯

Damon’s break up album! My favourite bits on this are all Graham though, his refrain in Tender and Coffee & TV!

Also a great excuse to post this video, one of the very best music vids!
