Vinyl Me Please Essentials

Sorry my dudes, but can someone explain to me what the 'cale mix' actually is? Im a complete novice when it comes to The Stooges so im intrigued by this. Is it the same tracklisting as the original?

John Cale was the original engineer for the Stooges first album, but the mix was never released due to the label I believe. It's only seen as bonus tracks on deluxe editions, but never fully on vinyl

This is it:The Stooges - The Stooges - Amazon.com Music

(Note that due to amazon's crazy state during coronavirus, the prices and quantities and ship dates are out of wack compared to what they typically are during normal times. This bad boy is usually $15.99, or at least around $20 when in stock)
Hmm, it does seem like it is pretty scarce at the moment all around.

You can get SOME of the Cale mixes on the 2LP versions

More Cale mixes on this CD set

If they were going to do it this way and use one obscure mix I think The Velvet Underground closet mix would have been a much better choice.
I have both an early UK pressing with the closet mix and a later 80’s pressing with the Valentin mix. I think if you’re a fan you definitely need both. Totally different experience for some songs.

Is there SERIOUSLY a reason I shouldn't get this version and get the other mix? I am a casual fan, so I am not overly worried about the sound quality differences.
The original is what the band and label approved

Besides John cale sounding rougher and thinner

If you start going down a rabbit hole of which VMP albums are "Essential" or "Classics" or even "Rap/Hip Hop" then you are going to have a bad time

I don't know, I'd think listening to the limited number of Essentials that are actually "Essential" and Classics that are actually "Classic" would be more enjoyable than listening to Ole Dead Eyes, Tennis, and Lloyd Miller.

The mix doesn't suck, it's more raw and a less polished, but I actually think the drums sound better on it and dig the way the vocals are set. It's an interesting alternative version and a lot better than some alternate mixes. John Cale was a risk-taker to say the least.

Ole dead eyes?

I mean you can also mention nada surf, that new seater Kinney, Cecilia y Johnny, Mr. Hands, Sarah Webster fabio

And including hip hop. N.E.R.D

VMP is also doing the 3 months of Essentials announcements this week.

good to hear. my sub is up and i need more incentive than an alt-mixed stooges album to keep going. other than a couple aotms and exclusives, only fomo and membership longevity has kept me in the last few cycles, and i think the last year of vmp fuckery has finally worn me down. there was a time where cam mentioned that older members might get some sort of tangible acknowledgement for sticking around for so long, but - *shocker* - nothing like that ever materialized other than the 'you've been a member since the early days, keep on spinnin'!' note on your sub page, but even that is gone now. hopefully by announcing 3mo out, they have something real good up their sleeves.

I really wish they would use the AAA release from 2010 and either have it remastered by Kevin Gray or have it cut at QRP or RTI or something. That Rhino release sounds “amazing” by the way. Just blasted it this morning. Still not an audiophile recording obviously but it sounds great. It was pressed at Rainbo if I’m not mistaken though. I’d still recommend picking that pressing up if you want the album in its original form.

Yes drums do sound better I agree. Some vocal takes have different features, like on Not Right. But I feel this neuters Ron Asheton’s guitars a little, one of the defining things about the original Stooges sound. Still a great album mind you and I like the alternate cover on it too. I already have the 2 disc rerelease of The Stooges which has a few of the Cale tracks. It’s only £17.99 on amazon UK. I’m a big Iggy fan though, have everything on CD and maybe 20 or so records by him or The Stooges. I bought tickets to a festival this summer with the only intention of seeing Iggy, but I guess COVID 19 has pissed all over that dream. Still, this is an excellent pick, much better than a load of scraps by some undiscovered garage band. And historically these are actually the original versions I guess

Also there is an unreleased track from this era, Asthma Attack. It could potentially be on this disc as well.

I have FLAC files of the speed-corrected Cale mixes, I should give them a listen.

Hopefully VMP knows that they are in need of speed correction.
