Sorry my dudes, but can someone explain to me what the 'cale mix' actually is? Im a complete novice when it comes to The Stooges so im intrigued by this. Is it the same tracklisting as the original?
John Cale was the original engineer for the Stooges first album, but the mix was never released due to the label I believe. It's only seen as bonus tracks on deluxe editions, but never fully on vinylSorry my dudes, but can someone explain to me what the 'cale mix' actually is? Hmm, it does seem like it is pretty scarce at the moment all around. This is it:The Stooges - The Stooges - Amazon.com Music
(Note that due to amazon's crazy state during coronavirus, the prices and quantities and ship dates are out of wack compared to what they typically are during normal times. This bad boy is usually $15.99, or at least around $20 when in stock)
I have both an early UK pressing with the closet mix and a later 80’s pressing with the Valentin mix. I think if you’re a fan you definitely need both. Totally different experience for some songs. If they were going to do it this way and use one obscure mix I think The Velvet Underground closet mix would have been a much better choice.
Is there SERIOUSLY a reason I shouldn't get this version and get the other mix? I am a casual fan, so I am not overly worried about the sound quality differences.I do not own any Stooges, so I am stoked for this.
The original is what the band and label approvedIs there SERIOUSLY a reason I shouldn't get this version and get the other mix? I am a casual fan, so I am not overly worried about the sound quality differences.
Why is VMP releasing this version then, if the consensus is that the mix sucks? Am I missing something? The original is what the band and label approved
Besides John cale sounding rougher and thinner
Because the full thing was never released on vinylWhy is VMP releasing this version then, if the consensus is that the mix sucks? Am I missing something?
If you start going down a rabbit hole of which VMP albums are "Essential" or "Classics" or even "Rap/Hip Hop" then you are going to have a bad time
Ole dead eyes?I don't know, I'd think listening to the limited number of Essentials that are actually "Essential" and Classics that are actually "Classic" would be more enjoyable than listening to Ole Dead Eyes, Tennis, and Lloyd Miller.
VMP is also doing the 3 months of Essentials announcements this week.
The mix doesn't suck, it's more raw and a less polished, but I actually think the drums sound better on it and dig the way the vocals are set. It's an interesting alternative version and a lot better than some alternate mixes. John Cale was a risk-taker to say the least.
Yes drums do sound better I agree. Some vocal takes have different features, like on Not Right. But I feel this neuters Ron Asheton’s guitars a little, one of the defining things about the original Stooges sound. Still a great album mind you and I like the alternate cover on it too. I already have the 2 disc rerelease of The Stooges which has a few of the Cale tracks. It’s only £17.99 on amazon UK. I’m a big Iggy fan though, have everything on CD and maybe 20 or so records by him or The Stooges. I bought tickets to a festival this summer with the only intention of seeing Iggy, but I guess COVID 19 has pissed all over that dream. Still, this is an excellent pick, much better than a load of scraps by some undiscovered garage band. And historically these are actually the original versions I guess
