Vinyl Me Please (store, exclusives, swaps, etc)

Okay. So... this is the new Rising

But it's not even exclusive to VMP? I thought that was one major points of the rising selections.

It's also $28. The only exclusivity seems to be the added 7-inch. The color is "seaglass wave." How much does that differ from the "cokebottle clear" that Secretly Store has for $19.99?

While a lot of them have been exclusive (and the best have been pretty much released by VMP for unsigned) they’ve not all been exclusive. I have a standard black press of the Middle Kids EP and there was an album they released by a decidedly average band (The Shacks?) that was just a colour variant of their album.

I know this was just some tossed off shade and not really the point but that Shacks album is a good one.

Don't think that is a rant. I just look at what I bought from VMP in 2017 and 2018 compared to 2019 and it is night and day. I think I grabbed 9 exclusives in 2019 and probably 4 of those were swaps. I stopped counting at about 20 exclusives in 2018 that I bought (not including standard issue curated items) and probably only about 4 of those were swaps.
I agree with ya on the exclusives...mostly color variants now which is good and bad. Good because I don't spend as much money at VMP anymore. The only actual exclusives I remember buying were Still Woozy, Kate Bollinger, Crumb (which I think has a general release now), De La is Dead and Stars. I really didn't buy a ton from VMP last year outside of the ROTMs + Blue Note Anthology. I definitely bought a lot more in 2018...

In terms of classics last year, I got 7/12 and liked 6 of them. The other months I swapped and found something I liked. Lloyd Miller was the only one I really didn't like out of the ones I purchased. Essentials fell off a cliff for me last year. I liked MAYBE 3 of them? RHH was even worse (only liked Outkast and I grabbed Hud Dreems for like $15 or so later on elsewhere).

it wasn't for me, but yeah more throwing shade on VMP for doing a colour variant of a wide release as a rising.
LOL, I think you need to go to Barcelona this Summer and bring Willie Bobo and The Shacks albums with ya. I think both these would be much more appreciated in sunny summer surrounding.

but the flexi disc is a totally different one from the bundle they have for 25 dollars

in all serious though the only reason youd want this is if you already have a subscription and dont wanna pay secretly shipping money

This is the main reason to buy ANYTHING "exclusive" from VMP these days outside of the ROTMs...and to be honest I'd rather give that money to Secretly or those other labels even if it's a few $$ extra for shipping.

Ive done Barcelona a few years ago. I’m thinking Bilbao maybe this year!

EDIT: I never bought The Shacks tbh, sampled on Spotify and decided against it. Me and Bobo are getting a divorce though, expect to see alongside Fancy Free (my all time least favourite purchase) on a Discogs near you very soon.

I love Donald Byrd but much prefer his later Jazz Funk/Jazz Fusion stuff to the Fancy Free era Byrd.

eh you do you

i prefer convenience (free shipping, records all coming at one time, i actually have never had an issue with the shipping) and simplicity of just buying from them

different strokes

Here, before you completely write em off, give this a go. It’s substantially different to Fancy Free...

I’ll give it a go at some point but at this point I’m pretty much writing the instrumental jazz genre off bar a few Miles Davis and John Coltrane releases.

To be honest I don’t even feel a little bad about it, I’ve tried it, it’s not for me, I have a huge collection, a huge wantlist and I don’t need to be digging into stuff I don’t really enjoy to be able to be “interesting” or “open minded”. Peer pressure is a burden I’m too old to care about lol!

Thats not to say that I think it’s without merit, that I don’t respect the artists or people who dig it, I’m just different to them 😀

As someone that is certainly not a Jazz aficionado by any stretch. (Give or take a few artists and genres) I think we share a fairly similar sensibility when it comes to the appreciation of modern popular music. I like to stay open to all genre’s and styles but nobody is gonna appreciate everything the same. All that to say, if you enjoy Funk or R&B at all give that Donald Byrd video a play it’s as much those styles as it is Jazz. If it’s not your bag so be it but you should give it a listen. Markedly different to Fancy Free.
