Vinyl Me Please Anthology

Sigh. Storfer said Anthology has a completely separate e-commerce infrastructure and is supposedly immune to the migration mess but .....

Just add it to the list of things VMP promised with these anthologies and then either underdelivered or completely ignored.

UPDATE: they are shipping it now. Managed to talk to VMP, mine is in the second batch and has just shipped. So looks like it will be okay after all

I've been heavily ramping up on old Stax-ish soul records. Atlantic had a TON of great talent on their soul roster. I've been binging on Rufus Thomas and Wilson Pickett lately. Also looking into picking up more Bar-Kays, Mar-Keys and Booker Ts. Anyone else have a soul recommendation?

Sidebar mention for Run Out Groove's current record by Barbara Lynn. I've never heard her and was immediately impressed by the samples I heard on YouTube. I've never ordered from ROG directly before, but have one of their LPs (Sonny Stitt) and like the way they do things. They press by the amount of pre-orders they receive. It's kind of funny to look at one of their older releases and see that they have 1395 (Stitt) or 898 for Lou Johnson's Sweet Southern Soul (CHECK THAT LP OUT!).

I dunno if you can say it's Stax-ish, but I think Johnny Adams is too slept on. Heart & Soul is an excellent comp.

Not sure if it really counts as 'soul' but Cher's cover of Walk On Guilded.. from the album she recorded with Muscle Shoals definitely is worth tracking down.

Forgive my complete ignorance but I have no idea what that means.
I was referring to Run Out Groove (ROG) in my original post. They repressed this Cher album that contains the song you mentioned. It's all come full circle.

Oh wow.. I have an original and had never even heard about this. Have you heard the bonus album? Any good? Is it more of the same type of thing?

I’ve just received my Stax Anthology in England. It looks beautiful.

Unfortunately, there’s a small split to one of the upper corners of the outer case; I’ve emailed asking for a replacement.

The whole package looks sturdy & well-made, though, & I can’t wait to open up all the albums.

I decided I would do this along with the podcasts/unboxing videos. Does anybody know when these will happen? Or any news about the Facebook group? Nothing has been communicated, as far as I know.

It's not even a good story! He discovered Stax, listened to them, and decided to liked the music. Great story, Storf. You should make a podcast and include that amazing anecdote and going to a museum!

Snap!!! I had the same experience. Tune in next week to Respect Yourself: How listening to Stax Records made me like Stax Records

I haven't heard it yet. In fact, I've never heard of this LP or that song before you called it out. Great funky tune. I sampled the rest of her original LP, but not sure if the other tunes are up anywhere. I've found they Run Out Groove does this often where they include bonus materials that are somewhat rare. That Baby Huey is a perfect example. It has a second LP that I think has not been released before. Sounds super funky! And they ship free in the US. Good site to keep an eye on.

Mine arrived back home but I'm currently at my parents house keeping my 5 month old from my flu ridden toddler.... so no Stax until Monday for me.

Oh man, you're not familiar with Walk On Gilded Splinters? Duuuuuuuude.... you're about to go down a rabbit hole. Check out Dr. John's original, or the version Beck sampled for "Loser", or Humble Pie's 16 minute live version. One of my favoritest songs of all times and it's hard to find a bad cover of it.

As far as Baby Huey goes - wasn't the second disc just the instrumentals?

That is a killer jam. Right after I played it, YouTube recommended an Allman Brothers version where Derek Trucks was killin' it on guitar. I can see how that song plays well as a cover. Will check out those others you've recommended!

The Baby Huey looks like most, but not all are instrumental versions. The comments on Discogs really sold me. Sounds like a home run for this version. I found it is the cheapest at Reverb.
