Vinyl Me Please Classics

So, of the Essentials artists that also fit as Classics, that had releases in 1968, we've got:

Aretha Franklin - Lady Soul / Aretha Now / Aretha in Paris
Jorge Ben - Nothing release in '68
Mavis Staples - Nothing released in '68
Miles Davis - Nefertiti / Miles in the Sky / Files de Kilimanjaro (But Miles has already had a Classics release)
Nina Simone - 'Nuff Said
Big Bill Broonzy - Big Bill Broonzy (Live in Brussels)
Ben Webster - Meets Don Byas in the Black Forest
Thelonious Monk - Monk's Blues / Underground

If it is Aretha why does everybody think Aretha Now as opposed to Lady Soul? They were both released in 68, right?

Both are awesome. Lady Soul had a reissue in 2018, from Rhino, whereas Aretha Now has not had a recent reissue. And while R&HH has done quite a few colour variants, Classics has not. Well, I guess there were a few Speakers Corner duplicates, but I think they try not to.

No Phrenology for you?
I like it but wonder how much I’d actually spin it...been trying to cut back on vinyl purchases as I’m all out of shelf space and recently got a digital streaming set up and have been using that quite a bit. I worry that picking up Phrenology would be more out of FOMO than me actually wanting it to spin.

Yeah same. Also, if I resub now, do I get this months record? I don’t want dirty projectors but I do want a spot to get Aretha.
I think we just have to wait until it is announced if we don't want one from this month, right? And hope that it isn't already sold out when it is announced, which has been happening lately.

They might double dip with Miles by saying his last Classics release was billed as Miles/Coltrane. Maybe put Nefertiti, Miles in the Sky, and Filles de Kilimanjaro in play.

Either way this might be the first month in quite some time where I’m jumping on all three tracks. Really good selections all around.
I highly doubt we are getting a jazz record this month even though it would be awesome to get a Miles record. Looking highly likely it will be Aretha Now which is just fine with me too.

We do know an Aretha Classics is on the way, I’m just a little surprised it comes just two months after Essentials. I would’ve thought they’d put a couple more months between releases although I can’t really give a good reason why so idk...

Feel the same way, but thinking back the live Davis/Coltrane and Sorcerer were only three months apart...so it’s definitely possible

I wonder if they meant to have them both in December, but this one got delayed.

Do you mean you prefer Spirit In The Dark to Aretha Now as an album, or you just need a copy of Spirit in the Dark more? Just curious.

They are both great albums. But I have Aretha now as part of the Atlantic box, which I'm not entirely convinced about quality wise. To be fair I'd be really happy with a great AAA pressing of Aretha Now, but Spirit in the dark hasn't had a decent pressing in over 30 years and I would love a good copy of that.

The only original Aretha vinyl I have is Soul 69.

I think The Atlantic singles album from a while back is worth a mention, sounds fantastic. If I didn't have that I would probably be happier with the Atlantic box .

When someone guessed Miles Davis for one of the recent jazz ROTMs on a Guess Me Please on reddit a couple months ago, storf said no because they already did a Miles Davis album. And while I believe he did mention they were thinking about double dipping on a big name artist in the future, that wouldn't be something they are gonna release next month....maybe several months down the line if they were "thinking about it" just last month. So I would rule out Miles in pen. I doubt it's Coltrane either even though he that Davis/Coltrane ROTM probably wouldn't rule out a future Coltrane ROTM.
