I had Train’s first album on CD in high School. I really liked the song “Meet Virginia”, unfortunately the rest of the album (and their career) kinda sucked beyond that track.

I mean part of me saying this and that is Train is because in a lot of ways they are all the same to me (Goo Goo Dolls, as well)… nondescript bland boring pop rock from the nineties. Hootie got a lot of shit back then but at least they were different. I also like Counting Crows (or at least those first two albums)

You should listen to some of Goo Goo Dolls early albums they were way more punk at the beginning; often compared to the Replacements, similar in a lot of ways to Soul Asylum and The Lemonheads. They started out as punk and slowly softened the edges becoming more poppy to varying degrees of success. I still think The Goo Goo Dolls - A Boy Named Goo was their sweet spot. Problem was (similar to Soul Asylum) they leaned the wrong lessons from their early success and pushed further into the schmaltzy realm of pop balladry which garnered them hits and airplay but also ruined their reputation as a punk band.

I hate that Iris song with an unbridled passion. It is almost the perfect summation of everything I hate about 90s American music.
