Vinyl Me Please Essentials

Yeah I get that, Farley Mix is a bit more accessible from the get go. BUT while Weatherall Mix starts pretty spacey and dubby, that crescendo from ~5:45-9:45 hits some nooks and crannies of my brain juuuuuust riiiiiiight. I should probably get a copy of that on vinyl.

Also I forgot to add The Beta Band - The Three EPs to your 90s British album list. It's the laid back Sunday afternoon version of Screamadelica.

I’d add in The Verve “a northern soul” and Pulps “his’n’hers”

Oh dude, I love The Beta Band. That album is amazing

Thank you all for the British suggestions. Us yanks have to seek that stuff out. I have the beta band 3 EP’s. I opted for the double album of that as I can’t stand flipping too much. Especially when getting into that type of music. I will add pulp and seahorses to my now running list. Cheers!

I always liked Gomez too, Liquid Skin and Bring It On.

No one has mentioned suede yet! How?

Their first two albums (s/t and Dog Man Star) are mega and the third (coming up) isnt as consistent but has some mega singles. Proper top quality filthy sleazy glam rock. Also Bernard Butler is a fucking mega guitarist.

Also The La’s, wonderful pop songs and arguably the band that acted as the precursor to all the britpop that followed!

Did anybody mention The Stone Roses debut? That should be on the list. I would probably also add Travis The Man Who to the list too but that one would probably bit more divisive.

Even though Nigel produced it? It’s basically a Radiohead side project.

[DUCKS]

I mean there are some ok singles on it but it’s nothing at all special imo. Had it come out 5 years earlier or later it’d have got lost in amongst better releases.

I’m going to throw Ash out there too. Nothing groundbreaking but it’s really fun solid power/punk pop.

Also of that time and worth a check out is MacAlmont & Butler. The Sound Of... s a great little album with a mega lead single, Yes. After leaving suede Bernard Butler teamed up with singer David MacAlmont and made a completely different type of music, it’s a sort of indie rock/soul hybrid.

Happy Mondays - Bummed or Pill, thrills and bellyaches
Black Grape- it’s great when you’re straight...yeah.

I absolutely rinsed the bollocks out of It's Great When You're Straight when it came out. Reverend Black Grape is one of my absolute fave all time indie bangers. Straight up magic that just makes you want to throw MASSIVE shapes. Like MAAAAAASSIVE shapes

You know what I really want VMP to release (probs too 'small' for an essential), M.I.A. ‎– Arular. That album slaps but even the UK pressings for sale on discogs all seem to be in Europe, I cant find an affordable copy here anywhere.
Omg yessssssssss! That album is an absolute classic! I love that album so much and I’m a huge M.I.A fan! I’ve got Arular on vinyl but would love that album to get the VMP treatment! Especially the Essentials ROTM treatment! 😍

I definitely don’t think it’s too small to be an Essentials pick. If we got Jim Sullivan’s U.F.O. and Caroline Rose within the last 12 months as an Essentials ROTM, then we can get Arular! 💯

However, I think Kala is more stronger pick for an Essentials ROTM! Nit only is Kala a more ‘bigger’ release as it has the hit single ‘Paper Planes’ and got was certified Gold, but it’s a more diverse album musically and there’s such an interesting story behind the whole album! The controversy with not being able to enter the U.S., hence not collaborating as much with Timbaland as she’d hoped too etc. 👨‍💻

Also, Kala is ranked #393 in Rollingstones Greatest 500 albums of all-time list! It’s Robert Christgau’s FAVOURITE ALBUM OF THE 21ST CENTURY!!! 🥇🏆

Kala is just so ahead of its time musically and politically and I think it would make for an outstanding Essentials ROTM! A ROTM that would also be very popular amongst VMP’s audience too! 🎯
