The Official Needles and Grooves 1001 Album Generator Project (aka Preachin’ about the Preachers if today’s selection sucks)

In fact, if people are arguing that Smashing Pumpkins aren’t grunge, I’d say it proves it’s merely a marketing term based on a scene, because the aesthetics of fashion and the distorted guitars owing to punk and classic rock are there too.
They’re not from Seattle. They had different influences but the music is similar.

I don’t care enough to argue about what is and isn’t grunge so they can be grunge if you want but grunge is more of a scene than a musical genre kinda like Manchester scene or the Brooklyn scene, etc…

Second wave grunge - STP, Bush, etc… weren’t from Seattle either.

Correct. But Smashing Pumpkins weren’t directly influenced by Grunge artists the way that STP, Bush, Live, etc… were either.
All I’m saying is they are just as similar to any of those bands in the first wave are to each other. Their ascendancy at the time was helped by their similar look and musical language. Smashing Pumpkins is the art kid to Nirvana’s cool stoner. And Corgan, at least then, seemed pretty hip and was probably just as influenced, just not a copycat like those other bands. Gish could have just as easily been made by any of the bands in that scene.

I don’t hate this Manu Chao. It deftly transitions between music styles I am somewhat familiar with to more modern type music I wouldn’t normally listen to. Kind of a poppy Latin version of what like Madlib does. It’s the kind of thing I’m here for, definitely not something I would have stumbled upon on my own and definitely broadening my talent.

If I recall back when this album was released, practically every review and write up about this record liked to compare Manu to Beck.

The track “Mi Gustas Tu” made it on to a few CD mixes back in the day.

I can see that with the cut and paste found sound aspect of it all. Especially with Mellow Gold and Odelay, it makes sense. I’d say it’s more akin to what Madlib and The Books do, but it’s really just minute degrees. This is smoother than Beck (the Dust brothers) or The Books, though.

Won’t be evident until about half way through but this is like a weird alternate reality soft rock version of the Beasties covering Johnny:
