There was talk a couple weeks back about starting a 7in singles thread. So I figured I would start something.

The humble 7 inch. Noisy, cheap and when done right a perfect 1,2 combo punch of excellent music.

You don’t have to be a collector of valuable 45s, just show what you have and what you like. I don’t actively collect 45s anymore, but still have about 300 in my collection. Love them and with many of them I can remember where I first picked them up.

First up

Das Damen - Sad Mile b/w Making Time (1989)
Part of the original Sub Pop Singles club. A great slice of indie rock. Sad Mile later appeared on their last album Mousetrap.

One of the things I love about 45s is that band often put great throw away covers on the B-side, and that is no exception here. A great slash and burn cover of The Creation’s Making Time.

Bonus
The Creation - Making Time b/w Making Time (instrumental) - think this was a bonus from Numero Group for subscribers who were getting The Creation - Action Painting compilation.

Takes long bong hit,,,

"This sounds terrible. Man, how can you make 45's worse?"

Passes bong. Friend takes long bong hit...

"I don't know man, they're already pretty rough."

Passes bong. Friend takes long bong hit...

"You could do bootleg recordings, man."

Passes bong. Friend takes long bong hit...

"Dude, you could also make it a picture disc."

YASSS!

Thanks for making this thread! Having already sold a majority of my 45s this past year (thanks again covid) I've been interested in documenting and sharing what's left of the amazing pieces I've acquired over the years. It's beyond regretful that I didn't start doing so before parting with my rarest stuff.

Here's a quick peek at what sold over the weekend before I package it up and send it out:

Am I right in thinking you collect what is Brits would call Northern Soul?

Am I right in thinking you collect what is Brits would call Northern Soul?
I do indeed, among a few other niche-y genres.

That's part of the charm of collecting 45s for me; whether you're after r&b or pop songs from the early 60s or post punk and new wave from the 80s (or both and all points in between), there's entire worlds of obscure, small label and often times one-off releases to explore. This is why I always liken 45 collecting to comic books, wherein trying to complete the discography of an unheard mid-western label is not dissimilar from seeking out every issue of a particular title, miniseries or story arc.

My obsession began in the mid 90s, collecting Motown 45s and then really going knee deep after realizing that the Tamla, Gordy and Soul labels were all under the same umbrella. From there that expanded into seeking out similar sounding music (ultimately leading to Northern Soul as a stylistic distinction), then into mod, garage, early psych and beyond.

Saying goodbye is so hard, pt 2

Like I said in a post yesterday, I’ve been wanting to document and share with friends my favorite and/or rarest vinyl as it sells, in an effort to hold onto some memory of the once great collection I had.

Sound clips are available on my Instagram, for the curious

Here’s what’s going out the door today:

I know they’re not super utilitarian but I’ve really gotten into getting 7” singles for my favorite artists, partially to fill a completionist desire and partially because I think the art choices are often so cool in terms of sleeve choices and, musically, song choices. I’ll throw up some goodies in pictures once my sleeves come in Saturday

My wife surprised the everloving shit out of me with this one:

I guess she ordered it back in May, but it danced around the U.S. awhile before finally making its way to our local post office while we were on the road last week. The kiddo's gonna be pretty pleased we have this too!

I held off on this because I wanted to get a few shipments in. I finally found the right deals for and pulled the trigger on some of the harder to find ones, which then led to collecting the cheaper ones.

As far as I can tell, this is a fully Jenny Lewis singles discography, a full Jenny and Johnny singles discography (minus the duplicative clear Love Hurts), and the Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins singles. I’m probably not going to complete the Rilo Kiley due to cost and duplication but I might have a couple more to get there.

This also completes my overall Jenny and J&J discographies which is great, may need to dig those out for a full family pic.

I really love both the art decisions and B sides on most of these.
