So-- because nerding out to music is what we do, and I've seen people get into "what year from this decade was best" discussions more times that I can count on this forum... I took my list from the "best albums of the decade" thread and tried to create an aggregate that measured quality vs quantity on a year by year basis.

There are 220 albums on my list, and though it is very much still a work in progress (2019 still isn't even over after all), this is how I scored things:

Top 10 album = 25 points
Top 30 album = 15 points
Top 60 album = 10 points
Top 100 album = 5 points
Top 150 album = 3 points
Top 200 album = 2 points
Top 220 album = 1 point

Obviously, this is completely subjective and I'm weighing whether the scoring system needs tweaking but this was the final result:

1) 2015: 24 albums @ 210 points
2) 2016: 23 albums @ 181 points
3) 2017: 29 albums @ 162 points
4) 2018: 29 albums @ 135 points
5) 2013: 19 albums @ 129 points
6) 2019: 24 albums @ 113 points
7) 2014: 24 albums @ 106 points
8) 2012: 15 albums @ 99 points
9) 2010: 16 albums @ 96 points
10) 2011: 16 albums @ 91 points

The interesting thing, is that seems about right to me (based off my top 50 lists)... other than 2013 really lacks depth and would probably drop below 2014/19' if I were to expand it to 250 albums. I'm also surprised that 2012 landed ahead of 2010 and 11'.

Anyways, I'll probably update this when I finalize my final list in February or there abouts-- but I thought I'd encourage an official place for the conversation that has happened so often in other threads over the years. How would you all rank this decade?

I have to finalize my list first but I will say that there are hardly any albums from this year that would make it into my top 100 of the decade.

I have 9 from this year in my top 100 but only 1 that's clearly in my top 30 (Angel Olsen). Definitely reminds me of 14' in that there have been 50+ albums I've enjoyed but only a couple that I'd consider a surefire classic.

In case people want to see it, here is how the math broke down:

YearTop 10Top 30Top 60Top 100Top 150Top 200Top 220ScoreRank
2010103533116 @ 969
2011112082216 @ 9010
2012104432115 @ 1008
2013116234219 @ 1295
2014012786024 @ 1067
2015433237225 @ 2101
2016251463223 @ 1812
2017053468329 @ 1623
2018024658429 @ 1354
2019023466324 @ 1136

Safe to say 2015 and 2016 rank up there with the best years of music since I've been alive (to these ears at least). 2013 was super top heavy but has some real classics. 2018 and 2017 were super deep. Not sure why the beginning of the decade didn't click with my on the same level as the rest of it.
