Doing a re-ranking of Yo La Tengo since I've been giving their full discography another listen recently.

some notes:
  • 80s Yo La Tengo is werid. I hadn't really listened to those albums since probably 2012, so my ranking last year was a little inaccurate. They hadn't really figured out their style yet and were trying to sound like Sonic Youth and R.E.M. at the same time.
  • Ride the Tiger is really not that good outside of the Kinks cover.
  • Stuff Like That There gave me a poor first impression in 2015 because of the covers, but they're good covers and the originals are really nice.
  • Fakebook seems so odd sanwiched between President Yo La Tengo and May I Sing With Me because it's a totally different style to those two. The covers on Fakebook are just outstanding and are doing a lot of the heavy lifting for that album in this ranking.
  • Summer Sun would probably be lower if it wasn't for "Season of the Shark" which is a god-tier Yo La Tengo song.

Why is there talk of Fleetwood Mac without telling me!!!

BN era Mac

1. Rumours (greatest album of all time)
2. Tusk (absolute wild masterpiece)
3. Fleetwood Mac (incredible but everything here is done better on Rumours for the most part)
4. Tango in the Night (kind of a mess, not in a good way like Tusk, but it does work more often then it doesn’t)
5. Mirage (knee jerk reaction to capture the magic of Rumours and just fails, the good songs aren’t enough to save it from being mid)

And the two I barely count lol
6. Say You Will (better then it has any right to be but definitely a “late career album by a classic rock band”)
7. Time (I’ve definitely listened to this before by I don’t recall a single song off it)

I’m not as good with their pre BN stuff but Then Play On is a masterpiece and Mystery to Me is a surprisingly good album also.

Arctic Monkeys

1. Whatever People Say I Am...
2. Favourite Worst Nightmare
3. AM
4. The Car
5. Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino
6. Humbug
7. Suck It And See

Maybe a little too soon with only 1 listen of The Car, but it did have an immediate like from me. Pretty consistently solid discography from them. Suck It and see is maybe the only one I could do without.

If Suck It And See is their worst album (and it might well be) then what a stellar discography.

  1. Whatever People Say I Am, That Is What I’m Not
  2. AM
  3. The Car

  7. Humbug
I know 6th seems low but I really love Suck It And See, so many tunes on that one. Humbug is a lot lower that it in my estimation, it isn’t bad but it’s the one time in their career that I felt they were wearing clothes that didn’t quite fit them, I always felt Josh Homme was far too influential on it.

I really like Suck It And See and don’t care much at all for AM. Humbug has never been high for me but just recently I started really digging it. Favourite Worst Nightmare is still my favorite.

humbug is my fave

arctic monkeys: humbug > am > tranquility base hotel & casino > the car > whatever people say i am, that's what i am not > favourite worst nightmare > suck it and see
