Marriott Hotels have been in the news a lot this week in the Boston area.
All furloughed workers have now been permanently laid off. An additional 200 workers were also just laid off as business has not returned and the government bailout funding has been depleted.
There is a lot of anger and more than 100 workers who were just laid off formed a picketing line outside the hotel today.
The workers claim the layoffs violate their union rights. They didn't lay people off in terms of seniority and those that were laid off got no guarantee to be hired back when the pandemic is over. They would also lose all their seniority. They say this violates their union contract.
To make matters worse, those who were furloughed back in March who are now permanently laid off, their unemployment is running out in just over a week.
One women they interviewed had 39 years of seniority at Marriott. At her age there aren't really any job opportunities for her. And she doesn't know what she is going to do when her unemployment ends in just over a week.
