NHL Thread Because There Isn't An NHL Thread

🤕

The Winnipeg Jets have placed captain Blake Wheeler on long-term injured reserve, the team announced Sunday.

The 35-year-old forward hasn't played since suffering an apparent leg injury on Dec. 10 versus the Vancouver Canucks.

Then-Jets head coach Paul Maurice said at the time that Wheeler would be out "a while," but he didn't give an exact timeline.

Wheeler has 17 points in 22 games during his 12th season with the Jets.

The NHL postponed a dozen games originally scheduled from Dec. 20-23 "due to the concern about cross-border travel and given the fluid nature of federal travel restrictions."

All matchups featuring a Canada-based club versus an American team during that span will take place at a later date.

Here are the games that the league will reschedule:

The NHL also said Sunday that its regular-season schedule will continue aside from those postponements, and a decision on the league's Olympic participation is expected "in the coming days."

Shortly after the NHL revealed its cross-border decision Sunday, the league also confirmed the Detroit Red Wings are holding off on playing through at least Dec. 26. Detroit had two games scheduled in that span - a home date against the Colorado Avalanche on Monday and a road clash with the Minnesota Wild on Thursday.

A rapid increase in COVID-19 cases in both countries has already forced five clubs to shut down temporarily and two more to halt play this weekend. On Friday, the NHL postponed all Calgary Flames, Avalanche, and Florida Panthers games until at least Dec. 27. On Saturday, the league added the Boston Bruins and Nashville Predators to that list while putting the Toronto Maple Leafs and Vancouver Canucks on pause through Sunday.

The NHL's holiday break will run from Dec. 24-26.

Honestly surprised they don’t just put a stoppage in place until January. Give all the teams a chance to try and get this “under control”. Have to also wonder if there are any talks of a bubble for the rest of the season, as it’s pretty clear this new variant is going to keep getting worse.

We are hitting a breaking point with Covid right now and according to sources, if the Olympics are a no go for NHL players, the league is considering moving up the Olympic break in February to January in order to pause the season 🤔

This is me continuing to complain about the terrible broadcast mess that this season is. Seriously. I’ve listened to more games on streaming radio broadcasts than watched this year. NBCSN might not have had the personalities, but at least they got the goddamn sport on tv in a reasonably predictable and efficient manner.

Maurice stepping down
I watched all of Paul Maurice's press conference when he announced this, and I've gotta say that it has made me an even bigger fan of this guy (even though I was already a pretty big fan to begin with). This is the kind of self-awareness that all professional sports needs more of. He knew things were going well for himself and his team, despite them being a couple games over five hundred. It certainly sounded like it was a weight off him mentally, which is probably as good of a sign as any that he needed to move away.

Hope that he is able to take the break that he deserves. The dude has literally been coaching professional hockey every year for the past 24 years, which is quite the feat considering he is only 54 years old.

BREAKING 🚨

The NHL and NHL Players' Association have reportedly agreed to pause the 2021-22 season from Dec. 22 to Dec. 25, according to Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli.

Teams must suspend all operations and will not practice or be tested during those days. Facilities will be reopened on Dec. 26 at 2 p.m. local time.

Tuesday's games between the Washington Capitals and Philadelphia Flyers and the Tampa Bay Lightning and Vegas Golden Knights will go on as scheduled, pending test results.

More to come.
