Neverending Covid-19 Coronavirus

I believe that people may get worse at following the rules, but for the politicians to end the shutdowns when by the statistics, the threat is worse, they would have to say that they were wrong, which isn't common. Meanwhile the death rate will still be climbing.

I guess we'll see though.
The vast majority of shutdowns are strictly voluntary (e.g. gyms, salons, retail) in my area of NC.

Twenty people isn't a proper test.

The President shouldn't be saying anything about possible drugs - if anything it should come from the FDA and then after appropriate testing.
I really don’t disagree. I would have much preferred had he gotten up there at the beginning and been honest along the lines of “this is gonna suck for a while, but we will listen the the experts at the CDC and WHO and we will get through this like we always have as Americans, together,” and then shut up. (I know that’s a rich fantasy.)

I am simply cautioning against dismissing something simply because Trump said it. He’s a bloviating jackass, but he is getting briefed by some of the smartest people on the planet in these matters. There might be a nugget or two of quality info that makes it out of his mouth even if garbled or by accident.

Canadian article about how long serious social distancing should last if we want a real effect (in the absence of treatment or vaccine):

(The answer is October.)

Are tweets not auto embedding most of the time for anyone else?

Latest numbers released in NY this morning confirm 3,254 new cases. This brings the total number of positive cases in 10,356. 3,254 is a rather large percentage when compared to total cases. And that was just with this mornings updated numbers. They are going to release another update this evening. That very would could NC close to doubling the number of confirmed cases in one day

My dad lives over the intracoastal waterway from me on an island. That island has banned any non-residents, excluding workers and healthcare caretakers, from entering the island from 7am to 7pm. This is presumably due to the fact that people swarmed the beaches, not practicing social distancing, on Thursday.

...unless you're self-employed where you get a cheery wave. It's an extraordinary package of measures and entirely welcome but it emphasises how Governments don't fully understand how their own populations work.

By sheer chance, this has happened days before I was to wind up my limited company and switch to sole trader. I might hold off on that and see if I can bag myself a company grant instead. If the state is flinging money around, it pays to try and catch some.
