Checked in with my aunt in North Carolina to see how see and her family are doing.

They are doing good.

But what really struck me was my aunts comments. Like many republicans she thinks this whole thing has been blown out of proportion.

She said think of the poor high school seniors who have had their senior year disrupted. Who won't be able to have their graduation ceremony. Think of the poor kids. Think of the poor kids who's sports seasons were cut short.

She went on and on with stuff like this.

I was just beyond amazed at how tone deaf everything she was saying was. It was really hard to hold my tongue.

In certain parts of NC it absolutely appears as if we are overreacting or at least doing way too much too soon. The fact is, the current degree of lockdown is unsustainable and people are talking about when this over in 2 weeks or so. All the closures were until the end of March. I guarantee you a lot of stuff reopens in 2 weeks and people start moving about way more. That’s when we will go parabolic. It’s impossible for most people to conceive of the magnitude of the issue without any immediate, tangible effects other than everything shutting down and no one getting sick.

I don't think there's any such 'too much, too soon' with this situation.

Anyone seen a good discussion or explanation of the variance in percent positive tests by location? Seems like it means something.

Maybe the higher the percent, the better indication they still haven't done enough testing to get ahead of older cases? Doesn't seem like NY, with all the tests they've done being at 25% positive is a good sign vs WA being at 7%.

specifically with NY I think it's a combination of lack of testing available + mass population. the less tests available the less likely they're going to test you if you don't have enough qualifying symptoms, so more likely the testing being done are for people that are assumed to already be positive.

The flip of that would be that in WA perhaps the spread has slowed considerably. I hope that is true. Considering a relatively insignificant amount of testing has been done everywhere in the US, including those locations, I'm sure it is too early to tell. But, hopefully it points to a relatively lower incidence of severe cases, which would be good.

One other contributing factor is up until a few days ago. You could only be tested if you came in contact with someone who has tested positive.

So that may have skewed earlier results as well. As tests were conducted on people who came in contact with rather than suspected cases.

It really depends on who they are selecting for testing. It's really difficult to compare any two populations if the testing is not fully randomized and it's not going to be because of limited resources.

Twenty people isn't a proper test.

The President shouldn't be saying anything about possible drugs - if anything it should come from the FDA and then after appropriate testing.

I shared this with my father. Who is also one of those "this is the flu" people.

I believe that people may get worse at following the rules, but for the politicians to end the shutdowns when by the statistics, the threat is worse, they would have to say that they were wrong, which isn't common. Meanwhile the death count will still be climbing.

I guess we'll see though.
