Day 1 pt 2
New Beginnings

Rhiannon Giddens - Tomorrow is My Turn

Rhiannon’s first solo album. A tribute to powerful women in music. I think officially Carolina Chocolate Drops is on hiatus, but it certainly seems like they aren’t around any more.

I chose this today because I am finishing up a book entitled Step It Up & Go which is a survey of North Carolina’s music through the years. The chapter I am currently reading is about folks not thought of as being from NC or that are transplants here. Rhiannon is a side bar in the chapter as the author draws out the similar path between her and Nina Simone.

Interesting factoid, I was at the show where the picture of Rhiannon featured in the book was taken.

Let's light this candle already.

Not only my first listen to this, but a record PIF'd to me by this month's host @avecigrec. Thank you, friendo...

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Andrew Gabbard "Homemade" (2021 Karma Chief)
Received this several weeks ago but hadn't had a chance to spin it. Remedying that at the moment. First off, this is a fantastic pressing. Shows that great sounding colorways can be made. Quiet, dynamic, beautiful. Gotta Groove Records may be one of the few plant remaining in 2021 putting out consistent quality. Music is pretty great too, with an obvious ode to classic 60s psychedelic Beatlesesque pop.

I adore this record.

Edit: I’m also fairly certain it qualifies for the other part of the day’s challenge too.

Day 1a - New Beginnings [play a debut from a new project for an artist in the wake of their previous project coming to an end.]

Kevin Morby - Harlem River

His first solo effort after moving on from Woods (he was their bassist up through Bend Beyond) and The Babies (a project he started with Cassie Ramone of the Vivian Girls), Morby released Harlem River, his homage to New York City, in 2013.

Peter Gabriel - S/T

Genesis definitely didn’t come to an end after his departure but this felt like a good choice for today’s topic…both projects had new beginnings once he left.

Day 1b - New Beginnings [give a new (to you) record a first spin]

Margo Cilker - Pohorylle

This record came out of nowhere for me late last year and blew me away. Just incredible songwriting, and the production by Sera Cahoone is on point. It turns out Margo lives in NE Oregon, a place very close to my heart. I was lucky enough to see her play these songs back in November, and it was a joy to see a full house singing along to each and every word.

My first copy was pressed off-center, and the owner of Fluff & Gravy was nice enough to send me this brackish swirl variant (only 100 pressed, and he had a couple left) as a replacement. Do yourself a favor and give this one a listen.

Day 2 - Nude Belongings
On this day in 1969 New Jersey police confiscated a shipment of John and Yoko’s Two Virgins album as pornographic. Play something that features nudity on the cover.

I don't have as many album covers with nudity as I apparently should. I found three and went with the one I thought would be least likely to be another's pick for today. Also I grabbed this during the Target sale and it's a killer album so was looking forward to spinning it again.
