I wouldn't consider saying Blackstar is top 5 to be a hot take. I have a hard time ranking top 5 or 6 though. I'm cool with you putting it number 1. Amazing album.

The Fragile is the best NIN album, followed closely by Pretty Hate Machine.

That first part is not a hot take in the slightest.
Second part...lukewarm. Bumps up a few degrees if you insist on “closely”. Although I’ll argue PHM is an artist indebted to synth pop (albeit darker but still echoes of Depeche Mode, OMD, etc) who has yet to find their own footing...that would come with DS.

I thought I was the only one who didn't vault DS to the top of the list with a Bullet.
Interesting.
PHM takes the #2 spot b/c its a seminal album that created the path to and the lane within the mainstream that would be widened and filled two years later by Nevermind.

There's definitely some stuff on Pretty Hate Machine that sounds dated but at the same time I kinda like that about it. "Dated" doesn't necessarily automatically translate to "sounds bad"

This. I understand what people mean when they say this, but I don't get why it would be an insult. Great music is timeless. I'll rock out to an 80s Linn drum machine beat any day of the week.
