I own a hard drive with terabytes full of music files. Literally tens of thousands of albums. More than I will ever listen to in my lifetime. No Compact Disc required.
 
Re: satisfying the need for a physical format. I've lately been finding that a quick n dirty DMM with a cheap punch out jacket and insert is LESS satisfying (and oftentimes less SONICALLY satisfying as well) than a HiRes stream on Qobuz. There's something about the tactility of a press like that feeling quite far removed from where the format once was.

Built a NUC, tied in Tidal, have a decent sized SSD, and love me some Roon. And if I want to start adding, I can check out CD’s from the library for free.

Even with my movies, I buy the disc, toss the case, and watch off my Zappiti. I then store the highest quality disc in a DJ style disc holder (ok, I have 4, but same difference). Way less space consuming. I have almost 2,000 movies on a total of 4 shelves.

I enjoy vinyl differently. I don’t know if the tactility plays into it, it’s more that I realize I’m going to sit and listen. No track skipping crap, so I’m a little more particular about what album I put on.

For me, vinyl if I can dedicate time and attention, streaming for when I’m working, have people over, when I am out of whisky, whatever.
 
So, have you ever had a plan and known you were to follow through and somewhere along the way changed your mind?

TL; DR version: I went with a Rega Planar 8.


Back in my 20’s when I was a young and broke Marine, a couple buddies and I drove to Vegas from Camp Pendleton. Three of us were cramped in a Toyota pickup and one of my friends kept telling us about how when we got there he was going to put $50 on black. Then depending on how that went he had all these scenarios games out.

Well, when we finally got there we went straight to the casino and stopped at the roulette table for Rob. Before we knew what happened Rob drops everything he had on red. And it came up black. He hadn’t gamed that one out.

I share this as I asked about two Thorens tables. I went to a neat shop here in Denver to listen to a TD-125 MKII with an SME3009 Series III and another TD-125 with a 12” arm. They both sounded good. Smooth, clean, tracked well, solid bass, no mechanical noise. Solid decks.

The dealer also had an open box Rega Planar 8 with an Aria on it. On a whim I asked for a demo… and was blown away. Silent and black background. Tight, dynamic, powerful bass. A midrange to send you to heaven. Detailed but smooth. Great imaging.

So, uh, I bet on black and got the Rega. Hopefully my luck turns out better than my buddy’s.

I’m at an equipment crossroads. My project debut 3 has been in the shop since December. I got it back this weekend and was disappointed. It seems like there is a lot of distortion. Do I send it back one more time, or just bite the bullet and get a U turn? I’m kind of at the point where I would sink as much money into it as buying a new U Turn. I could save a bit by keeping my orophone red that is on my project and switching it when I receive the U turn. Also I have a couple of technics coming my way, but I’m kind of holding them till someone has the money to buy them (long story). I could use one of them till I got the project sorted out.

Distortion is a weird one. Unless there’s an onboard phono acting up or it’s running noticeably fast or slow I wouldn’t imagine that’d be a fault so much as set up? Have you checked the cartridge set up, tracking force and alignment? Do the stylus and needle look ok to the eye?

Needle looks fine. And the cart looks connected.

Then I’d check tracking force with your scales and alignment with the protractor that came with the turntable. If it still sounds off I’d get back onto the shop. If the distortion is still there, they should have a warrantee on the work they’ve done.
