Not this...

Really surprised that New Order is missing from so many lists. I thought that album was more ubiquitously loved.
It's my favorite New Order album. But I can't outrank it vs. my favorite Replacements album, and one of my top 10 all-time favorite albums.

1985

  1. The Replacements - Tim
  2. New Order - Low-Life
  3. The Cure - The Head on the Door
  4. Husker Du - Flip Your Wig
  5. Husker Du - New Day Rising
  6. The Smiths - Meat is Murder
  7. The Jesus and Mary Chain - Psychocandy
  8. Beat Happening - Beat Happening
  9. Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers - Rockin' and Romance
  10. Talking Heads - Little Creatures

I listened to Kate Bush's Hounds of Love and it was decent. Definitely can't rank it after one or even a few listens. This list could change after some more time with it.

1985

  1. The Replacements - Tim
  2. New Order - Low-Life
  3. The Cure - The Head on the Door
  4. Husker Du - Flip Your Wig
  5. Husker Du - New Day Rising
  6. The Smiths - Meat is Murder
  7. The Jesus and Mary Chain - Psychocandy
  8. Beat Happening - Beat Happening
  9. Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers - Rockin' and Romance
  10. Talking Heads - Little Creatures

Man what a year.. had to make a lot of cuts
I have a hard time choosing between P,C&L/Low-life and Let it Be/Tim. All 4 albums are incredible.
YES

1985:
1. Wire Train - Between Two Words
2. Hüsker Dü - New Day Rising

6. The Three O'Clock - Arrive Without Travelling
7. The Replacements - Tim
8. R.E.M. - Fables of the Reconstruction
9. The Cure - The Head on the Door
10. The Smiths - Meat Is Murder

HM:
The Alarm - Strength
Camper Van Beethoven - Telephone Free Landslide Victory
Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - The Firstborn Is Dead
The Cult - Love
The Hooters - Nervous Night
The Jesus and Mary Chain - Psychocandy
Love and Rockets - Seventh Dream of Teenage Heaven
New Order - Low-Life
The Pogues - Rum, Sodomy & the Lash
Prefab Sprout - Steve McQueen
The Sisters of Mercy - First and Last and Always
Sonic Youth - Bad Moon Rising
Talking Heads - Little Creatures
Tom Waits - Rain Dogs
The Waterboys - This Is the Sea

1) Kate Bush - Hounds of Love: one of my 3 or 4 favorite albums ever
2) Tom Waits - Rain Dogs: also one of my favorite albums
Both Rain Dogs and Hounds of Love create weird, unique sonic worlds that I love to get lost in.

Choosing between these two was difficult but I think I slightly prefer Tim? Two of my favorite bands.
3) The Replacements - Tim
4) Husker Du - New Day Rising

5) Mekons - Fear and Whiskey: "I was out late the other night, Fear and whiskey kept me going" is one of my favorite album opening lines.
6) The Pogues - Rum Sodomy and the Lash: On a family trip to Ireland, the only music player working in the rental car was the CD player so we grabbed some Pogues CDs at a gas station. For Christmas that year, my brother and I coincidentally both got each other this record.
7) Husker Du - Flip Your Wig: Green Eyes! Crazy this came out the same year as New Day Rising
8) The Jesus and Mary Chain - Psychocandy
9) REM - Fables of the Reconstruction: hmm probably my least favorite 80s release from REM but it's still solid REM which means it's pretty good.
10) Talking Heads - Little Creatures: I know I'm leaving some albums (New Order, The Fall, Indestructible Beat of Soweto, etc) off that are probably better than this one but they're my favorite band and "And She Was" and "Road to Nowhere" mean a lot to me

Apparently 1985 was a really good year for music

I don't know why I can't get into Kate Bush. Always makes me feel like I need to turn in my music nerd card.
WHAAAAAAAAT?!?!? I can’t even! NO NO NOOOO!

You need to be in the same room as me, and listen to Kate Bush’s “The Dreaming” and “Hounds Of Love” with me! You need to feel both these albums! Like I need to put the right perfume on and turn the lights off and put candles on and have a kinky, majestic, royal, Princess-like looking bed in my room and then put you in the mood for Hounds Of Love!

Like, you need to be there with me Dhodo when you listen to Hounds Of Love (and The Dreaming). Like I want to seriously take you out on a dinner date then play those albums on the turntable and just make you connect with those albums lol

Even though I’m a bit “nawwwwww” that Kate Bush’s Hounds Of Love didn’t take the #1 spot, I’m so happy it’s above The Smiths! 😅

I’ve never listened to Kate Bush
OMFG you lazy, unromantic bum! 😂😂😂

I literally can’t even with you right now! Stop sleepwalking and wake the f*** up! Seriously, you need to listen to Hounds Of Love! I don’t even want to see you write down your 1985 list until you listen to Hounds Of Love in full, and have fully digested that masterpiece!

EDIT: OMG, you thought Hounds Of Love was decent! 🥺🥺🥺

thsts not one of my favourite albums by The Smiths, its excellent and I love “That Joke Isn’t Funny Anymore” but it’s not quite at the level of the two that follow.

Hounds of Love is very special but then so too is Psychocandy, it’s like The Beach Boys or Phil Spector decided to build the wall of sound backing their pop songs not with an orchestra but with layers of distorted guitars, I love it!
