There's a dead zone in the late 2000s / early 2010s where I connected hard with a handful of records but found most everything else pretty underwhelming. 2011 was one of those years. It's also the year my mom died and I got married within six months of each other, so while #1 would have been #1 regardless, it was also the soundtrack to those huge events. #2-4 would likewise make it onto my list of favorite records from the decade. #5-15 might as well be listed alphabetically. They're my favorites of the year, but unlike other years that isn't necessarily saying much. They're perfectly fine – and I still listen to all of them – but they hardly set my world on fire.

1. Elbow – Build a Rocket Boys!
2. Frank Turner – England Keep Your Bones
3. The Joy Formidable – The Big Roar
4. The Horrors – Skying
5. Youth Lagoon – The Year of Hibernation
6. Los Campesinos!Hello Sadness
7. Girls Names – Dead to Me
8. R.E.M. – Collapse Into Now
9. M83 – Hurry up We're Dreaming
10. Parts & LaborConstant Future
11. Explosions in the Sky – Take Care, Take Care, Take Care
12. PJ Harvey – Let England Shake
13. Radiohead – The King of Limbs
14. Mogwai – Hardcore Will Never Die, but You Will
15. The Pains of Being Pure at Heart – Belong

1) Destroyer - Kaputt: When I go on a trip, I download a lot of albums that either fit the theme/location of the trip or I'm just particularly feeling at the moment. A couple of albums from the list usually rise to the top as the soundtrack of the trip. Anyways this was one of the albums I ended up listening to constantly on a trip to Vancouver. In addition to being a great album, it also now brings me back to one of my favorite trips. Vancouver rules.

2) EMA - Past Life Martyred Saints
3) St. Vincent - Strange Mercy
4) Real Estate - Days
5) War on Drugs - Slave Ambient
6) Nicolas Jaar - Space is Only Noise
7) Panda Bear - Tomboy
8 )Danny Brown - XXX
9) Oneohtrix Point Never - Replica
10) Shabazz Palaces - Black Up

This was a good year. Some really great albums didn't make this cut. It was hard to get a 4-15ish ordering I was satisfied with but this'll have to do. I already feel bad about leaving Kate Bush out of the top 10 but I just don't go back to that album very often.

A lot of my favorite 2010s artists released albums this year (St Vincent, War on Drugs, Jaar, Danny Brown, OPN) but not my favorite 2010s album of theirs with maybe the exception of Slave Ambient.

Not a big year for me music-wise - I was still buying mostly used records and had a toddler in the house.
