Surprised at how many lists don't include Ride, I figured that would be a given. Not for everyone I guess. Love that album.

I personally think it’s the pinnacle of the Shoegaze genre. It’s a flawless album front to back.

Whenever, I’m listening to it in my car, I always crank the volume unbearably loud when “Dreams Burn Down” comes on. Those fucking drums.

And let’s not forget “Vapour Trail”. Low-key one of the greatest songs of all time.

weird year...maybe save for shoegaze it seems like every fad of genre was either just ending or just finding it's feet.

2. Ride - Nowhere
3. The Field Mice - Skywriting
4. A Tribe Called Quest - People's Instinctive...

HM
Bell Biv Devoe - Poison - lets be honest, we all know one song and one song only from this album. its a GD banger, but still...one song
Roger Waters - The Wall: Live in Berlin - I wore this album out as a kid. the whole concept and performance set against such a back-drop was mesmerizing. I could probably add up all listens from the 10 albums above and it wouldn't tally how many times I listened to this.

It´s always interesting that the lists get the more diverse if the year Comes Closer to the years many of us were active Music listeners. The further back in time we go the more we are obviously listen to a common Canon delivered by best of lists and publications

Went back and forth with a lot of these, but I've settled. Some dreamy music and hip-hop classics, for sure.

Yea calculating up the years in the 60/70s is sooo much easier than the 90s/00s/10s because of this.

Here's what I like about this thread. There is always 1 or 2 albums that I'm like: ".....Wait, What??, Really?" Either, its an act or release I was totally unaware of or something that I never even tried to hear.

The 1990 version of that: Cocteau Twins - Heaven or Las Vegas.

I'm going to Audit the Heaven or Las Vegas Class over the weekend.

Yikes. This just seems like a crazy year to try to do this. I was a junior in high school, I had just discovered indie music, and all this amazing shit was hitting at once. My attempt at a Top 25 (and ranking these was a fool's errand):

1. Ride – Nowhere
2. The Sundays – Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic
3. Fugazi – Repeater
4. Midnight Oil – Blue Sky Mining
5. The Blue Aeroplanes – Swagger
6. The Lightning Seeds – Cloudcuckooland
7. The Fall – Extricate
8. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – The Good Son
9. The Trash Can Sinatras – Cake
10. The Chills – Submarine Bells
11. Public Enemy – Fear of a Black Planet
12. The Charlatans – Some Friendly
13. Sonic Youth – Goo
14. The Waterboys – Room to Roam
15. They Might Be Giants – Flood
16. Happy Mondays – Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches
17. The La's – Self-titled
18. Sinead O'Connor – I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got
19. Jane's Addiction – Ritual de lo Habitual
20. Pixies – Bossanova
21. The Church – Gold Afternoon Fix
22. Pop Will Eat Itself – Cure for Sanity
23. Carter USM – 101 Damnations
24. Bob Mould – Black Sheets of Rain
25. Cocteau Twins – Heaven or Las Vegas

I really wanted to make room for Depeche Mode's Violator and Living Colour's Time's Up, but I just couldn't make it work.

  1. Public Enemy- Fear of a Black Planet
  2. Sonic Youth- Goo
  3. A Tribe Called Quest - People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm

No Deee-Lite’s “World Clique” on your list?.....😟

Maybe my least favourite year from the 90’s! But I love how just old-school in a timeless way so many of these albums are! Especially Mariah Carey, Public Enemy, Deee-Lite, Depeche Mode, Sinéad O’Connor & Ice Cube!

2. Deee-Lite - World Clique
3. A Tribe Called Quest - People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm

6. Ice Cube - AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted

6. Neil Young - Ragged Glory
7. Midnight Oil - Blue Sky Mining

Definitely a transitional year and a bit of a valley between the two excellent years of 1989 and 1991. Some strong albums, but pales to its neighbors.

My top 10 of 1990:
