Eventually, every list will be biased. Legacy-bias, recency-bias, geographical-bias, formative-bias, artist-limit-bias, you name it. But taking snapshots of what everyone currently considers their favorites for whatever reasons and putting them together into a big list is kind of fun.

Madvillain will make at least my top 15 but The Unseen will end up even higher. In my opinion, both albums are not only among the best Hip Hop albums ever made, but also among the best sample-based albums in general.

Just because I would like to see more diverse individual lists in terms of artists. And artists that are considered better than others appear naturally higher on the list. And I guess ranked lists are always artificial to a certain degree, because they force you to quantify emotional attachment...

What do you think about limiting the number of albums by the same artist(s)? Although I can understand that it is hard to restrict personal choices to one or two albums from certain artists, I find it annoying to see 5+ albums by the usual suspects in these lists. It might be interesting to see...

Yeah, that´s true. I did not take the "and" into account. But this means Madlib and Doom are also potential connections, and label-wise also Star Trak, on which Fly or Die and Lord Willin have been released and probably the Neptunes themselves as well, as they produced Lord Willin´.

I agree that Orchestra of Bubbles is unlikely for an Essentials pick, although I am not sure about the general appeal of VMPs electronic releases. While FlyLo´s Cosmogramma sold out rather fast (at least to me that was unexpected), Four Tet´s Pink will probably hang around in Swaptions forever.
