The Waxhole: Speakeasy & Whisk(e)y Lounge

Wilderness Trail Bourbon. A slightly off the beaten path brand that's always really good and worth a try. They do Bourbon, Wheat and Rye. This one is a single barrel bourbon at cask strength, but like most (all?) Wilderness, its a relatively low 110 proof.

That Audio GD looks incredible, including the DAC. R2R even! It's been a few years, but I had the Schiit Saga tube preamp. It's a great little source selector, but it's a passive preamp, so it only attenuates - no added gain of its own. It also means the tube is just a buffer, and not a gain...

I'll chime in with my two cents, since I have a Chinook and @AnthonyI's old Insight... I have the Insight in the 2nd system, and the Chinook in the primary. The Chinook is probably my last phonostage. It's had zero issues (bought used a couple years ago) and still running the original tubes...

I've had a pour of it and like it, but it's about $100 around here. Not sure I like it quite that much

High West Double Rye finished in Rum barrels. Not great. Tastes like a nice rum finish trying to cover up mediocre, young rye. It's partially successful, but not enough.

Bought this solely because it was Whisky Advocate's Whisky of the year for 2023. It's really good, esp for $70. I think the secret ingredient is that it's 50.5% alc, rather than 40-45% for a lot of scotch. That extra proof dials everything up a notch. A def re-buy at this price.

Ardbeg is a bottle that has always lasted me a very long time. You have to be in the mood for a beatdown. If you're still interested in venturing out, I recommend Bruichladdich Port Charlotte 10 year - Much more balanced. Laphroaig is great as well.

It's a spicy meatball for sure. Lil bit of water tames 'er down nicely though.

Love out of state liquor stores. Its the same sort of excitement as hitting an unfamiliar record store. Could be a bud light/Dan Fogelberg kinda place, or maybe a surprise Old Forester single barrel barrel proof/old Japanese pressings honey hole...

I'll be trying out Uncut Unfiltered eventually, since I think its basically the same thing, just with more age. Also about twice as much money of course

For only being about 4 year old bourbon (MGP juice), this is surprisingly good. Barrel proof (58%) for about $40 is also a bargain these days.

I don't see anything missing or going the wrong direction. @spydrwebb44 Remember to keep consistency between which are the "left" vs "right" cables during your hookup too. You can check you've got the left and right done correctly with the track "L/R" by Nilfur Yanya (or prob some...

Very nice! I always have a bottle of Evan black bottle on hand. It was my grandpa's house whiskey, and therefore my training wheels/gateway bourbon. I used to buy him EW single barrel bottles every year, and wish I would've set a couple aside since I don't think they offer them anymore...

My first Jefferson's bottle. I think I expected something more extreme, given the unusual treatment of sitting in intense heat and humidity for an extended amount of time. Maybe some intense barrel character or something? It's actually pretty smooth and very graham crackery. A nice change-up...
