Nope. You get a surface noise advantage using a mono cart, and little differences between the groove walls can cause things to briefly "fall" out of the center of the stereo image when using a stereo cart. These are both incredibly minor and can be dealt with by just summing the left and right channels, I believe you can get switch boxes that do that if you need.

The record itself will not wear any different. I love the mono records I have and have never felt the need to pony up for a dedicated mono cart {though I do sum the channels when I rip them}.

Can't help you there, haven't heard both versions of Pet Sounds but I will tell you that I play the crap out of my Beatles in Mono while the stereo stays on the shelf. This is admittedly partly down to the monos being pressed better and overfamiliarity with the stereos, but after hearing Rubber Soul in mono you won't go back.

I think the key with choosing mixes is often what it was originally mixed in. The bad mixes from the 60s are because mono was the artists one and the stereo was done after the fact by engineers for a niche market. Having heard both of Pet Sounds the mono is better for me but the stereo isn’t the worst offender for its time.

Pet Sounds is my favorite album. I have owned several versions of the record. The AP Mono 45rpm press is the best reissue of the album I have ever heard. Brian Wilson was deaf in one ear and mixed and arranged all their music in mono to to accommodate this. Mono is how to experience the Beach Boys when given the option.

The mono released in the Carl And The Passions – So Tough two-fer is an easy, cheap way to get Pet Sounds on mono - it may not sound as good as the AP 45rpm, but my copy sounds pretty damn good.

@LeeVing I completely agree with this. I had a copy of Carl and The Passions Twofer and a more recent Capital reissue and I got rid of the Capital reissue because I prefer the former to the latter. It is a nice alternative for when I don’t wanna keep flipping sides on the AP release.

I dunno why I want the Carl and passions when I just want pet sounds and not the others

It’s more music for less money. It’s a nice value play. Plus Carl and The Passions includes one of Dennis Wilson’s best songs...
