No. I think "project" may be a more apt description since there is a core of Albarn/Hewlett around which there are rotating members. Or, if we don't try to get fancy, just "band". But I wouldn't call them a supergroup.
Do they have consistent members now or something? I don't think there was hardly any consistency in personnel across the first few albums besides Albarn and Hewlett.
@Melt Face Molly Drop that leads to the question of would you still call them a side project, as Gorillaz have been arguably Albarn's main focus the last couple of decades and (perhaps) more popular (at least worldwide) than Blur? Full disclosure: I am only tangentially interested in Blur or Gorillaz so others can probably fill in context of both bands popularity and success.
@YoHabloEspanol, I think postal service is a super group. Every musician was famous prior and the band stays consistent.
Gorillaz are not a super group because its one man's visions and the collaborators and producers change on every album. You mught as well call the Blueprint as Kanye, Jay Z at that point.
I'm apparently in the minority in my Music League though as it's wracking up points.
I had the Postal Service confused as just Death Cab sending each other tapes until they got an album they liked. Read up on them now and ok, súper group.
So Josh Homme has QOTSA as his main band, Eagles of Death metal as a side project, and Them Crooked Vultures as the súper group.
@DownIsTheNewUp who else do they say is in the supergroup? Do they think a super group just means really popular group? Or group formed by an already famous person?
We need to get to an agreement here.
Here's my proposal:
Band Alpha has members A, B, C, D. Band Beta has members X, Y, Z. Band Omega has members 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. A super group mixes them all up. So a potential lineup could be B,C, X, Z, 2, 3. If individual members of one band branch out it's a side project, like an EP from 1, 2, 3.
