@djdavedk lol, no. If I had more restraint, then I wouldn’t be doing this. It’s something I’ve needed to do for a long time. I’ve tried limiting myself, I just haven’t had much success.

Set a monthly budget and stick to it, if you can't, hand finances over to your mate.

I know a guy who would buy Rocket to Russia, B-52s, and both Love and Rockets..

Thinking about tnis more rationally, I’ll likely keep only the ones I absolutely cannot part with, sell the rest, and see where I’m at then.

@Sonicpharmacist my collection is at about the same size as yours and as of late I have also been feeling “out of control.” I’m even considering (in passing) stopping buying records.

That being said, I’m looking forward to your Discogs link.

I wonder if there’s a certain threshold that you cross once you have so many records and it becomes harder to justify not getting another (“I have a fucking Phil Collins album, so surely I have room in my collection for X, Y, and Z as well”). I remember the departed High Rant District mentioning that he found +/- 700 LPs to be the ideal collection size, and I have been wondering if he had a good point there.

That was the price Enoch wanted when he decided he was selling everything off.

Seriously though, if you do sell up, don't stop coming here. This isn't just a vinyl forum, you know!

Worth considering, I'm always selling stuff, things I don't listen to anymore, It's very easy to buy a lot of records , especially hanging round places like this. I have certainly reduced my purchases of new Vinyl a lot . My tastes have changed and I'm currently mostly listening to jazz . Maybe just sell a whole bunch of stuff that doesn't get the love and see how you go.

I think not having the time is always going to be an issue regardless of the format. As a collector of many things over the years, the struggle is real.

I think about the money I spent on records that I “had to have” which then just sit around forgotten while new ones keep on coming. It’s pretty ridiculous.

@kafunis that’s the more reasonable approach, likely what I’ll end up doing

Refocus back to what matters most - the actual music and the experience of listening to an album. Erase the FOMO brainwashing of #'d this, limited that, variant here, variant there, variant everywhere. All of this money-grabbing garbage is what can move you away from being a music collector that buys for what's actually in the grooves to a record collector that buys for the pageantry.

@Sonicpharmacist you have clearly thought a lot about this but can I suggest something? Start off selling the stuff in your collection that you just don't listen to or that you wouldn't mind not ever seeing again. That in itself will be a lengthy process with the collection size you have and if you ever did U-turn or decide to keep a small pile at least you can pick from your favourites.

Good point @Selaws, Sell the stuff you bought 3 years ago that you haven’t listened to in 3 years. You won’t miss them.
