I think it's 75% collusion to be honest. Someone on reddit did a deep dive on "bidders" with little to no feedback/experience and it was widespread across certain sellers. Same bidders would bid their stuff up only to drop out. eBay just doesn't give a shit.

There’s a lot of reasons but here’s one legit one that I use sometimes.

I’m willing to pay $200 for something, I know there’s a chance that if enough eyes get on it it’ll end for more than that. I will sometimes TRY to get the price high at first in order to keep potentially interested bidders from putting it on their watch list and thus keeping it “off their radar”.... the less eyes on it, the better.

I tend to do the opposite and set my limit in my head and then watch it. Iff the auction is still obtainable, then I’ll bid at the last second. If it’s at a price that I’m not willing to pay then I just let it go.
